While the newspapers yesterday were printing stories of the dying condition pf the “Only Original Harris Cohen," who started the first second-hand store on Baxter street, the “Only Original” was sitting up In a big Morris chalr at his son's home, No. 931 Park ave- nue, placing bets on that clever twwive- to-one shot Irish Lad Harris Conen {9 ill. He is confined to ‘his room and cannot visit the race track, but while thousands of people were thronging to Gravesend yesterday and placing their money on the wrong horses Barris was able to lle back in his chair, emoke a tine cigur and pick the winner. Cohen reads the daily papers, and there is not one item of sporting or| racing news that escapes him. Yesterday afternoon while the tickers ‘were telling off the story of the race the telephone in the Cohen house was in constant use announcing the results of the races to the old man. straight and $100 place on Irish Lad at 1 tol. Not Dying as Yet. “The news that Mr. Cohen was dying rought many reporters to our * gald Mrs, Jacob Cohen, his daughter-in-law, to an Evening World reporter to-day, “but we do not want father to know how serious his condi- tion has been. He ts quite sick now, but his conditior. has been exaggerated. Next reek he is determined to go to Saratoga. “It has been one o/ the greatest trials of his life that ie has been unable to attend the races, but there Is no one in New York who is better posted on every horse that runs.” CxYen's career has been an Interesting one. He came to New York forty-eight years ago from Dressen, Germany, a boy of fourteen, and started out ped- dilng shoestrings. His next venture was to start a second-hand store and to marry Zettl Gruen at the immature age of seventeen. His early start in life, however, resulted in his accumulating @ large fortune and a large family when most men are yet starting out in the world. He was the first of the grand army of Cohens to siart a clothing store in Bax- ter street, locally known as ‘fhe Bay.” The little thoroughfare was at that time callod Orange street. All of his business career was centered around the little store where he made his start. He goon accumulated a large fortune. Patrons Led Him Into Racing. “The way my father became interested in racing, said Mr. Cohen, through ‘rich patrons coming into It store und talklag sports. Lawyers and doctors and prominent men used to con- gregatc there and ask him to place Movey on this horse or that. That was the neginning. My father soon became an enthusiast. and when he made a million dollars his allegiance to track wus complete. He bought a able and owned many famous horses, Our home for vears was at No. 186 White airest, and the store at No. 14 Baxter." Cohen, after his success in business, Degan to lose Money. He fnally went info ‘the produce business in Brooklyn ~ after closing bis racing stable. In 1594 his daughter died, and two yea o his wife. Since then he has talcen little in- torest In active life. The Brooklyn Handicap furnished one of the most superb contests ever seen on the Gravesend course. Not only was the record broken for the course, but the old tradition that a mare or a three- year-old could never win the Brook- lyn were rudely shattered. Conroy was the only three-year-old to win a Brook- lyn up to date, and there was many that have made the claim that Conroy was very much favored by the weights and the condition of the track on the day that he beat his fleld in 191, The track was very heavy and Conroy | proved to be a wonderful mud runner. No claims of advantages can be made in the case of Irish Lad. This remark- able three-year-old conceded wetght— under the scale—to every horse in the race barring Col. Bill. He made all his own pace and stood the stiffest sort of a gruelling drive all through the last | quarter. Hs victory was a surprise, cause racegocts had read in all the papers which make a specialty of report- ing morning gallops that the trial of Irish Lad on Tuesday was a distinct disappointment to his trainer, John W. Rogers. Set a Fast Pace. It was stated that Irish Lad was slug- wish and did not appear like his usual felt. But there was nothing of the sluggard about Irish Lad yesterday. He covered the ground in strides that were space-devouring. He set a terrific pace, and yet was going well in hand for the first half mile. Evidently there had been a great improvement in Irish Lad between the time of hs trial and his race.yesterday Or was his form cleverly concealed? No one dleputes the right of a trainer to conceal the form of his horse in trials {f such a thing ts pos- sible, and_the victory of Irish Lad ts one on the publi: which studies trials and form, At any rate, Irish Lad's Trace was a superb performance, and it places him easily at the head of the three-year-old division, Africander, winner of the Belmont, and Shorthose, winner of the Withers, must pale Into insignificance beelde the glorious performance of this three-year- old son of Candlemas. In shouting Irish Lad's praises, how- ever, the fact must not be lost sight of in beautiful condition during the gan- boliing hours. The track js lightning fast, the time made In yesterday's Han- dicap speaking for itself. ‘The course was thronged with racers all during the taining period, the big and little strings |passing over the ground in impressive nuntbers, A feature of the morning's training operations was « handy four furlongs negotiated by the full brother to Ramapo, a colt named Lorillard, who | stepped off half a mile in # seconds, handily, with a good-sized boy up. Semiramis breezed one mile at a two- | minute clip. G. B, Morrise Old Eng- land, Homestead, Durazzo and Gravina were sent to slow gallops. McGivney's Flying Gypsy was given a slow gullop and breeged through the stretch at a two-minute galt. Burlew's extensive string were given exercises in the shape of trotting and caytering, Bob Smith's Masedo, who is entered In to-day's races, was breezed through the stretch in 0.26 handily. Trainer Dick Miller sent Africander, in company with North Brook and Ros tand, to lght trotting and cantering. The Murphy two-year-olds were sent to slow galloping. The Fleischmann string were out in two sets, the two-year-olds being gal- loped along to routine exercises. ‘frain- ‘er Welsh sent Hurstbourne a mile in 1.51%. Training Gallops that Gunfire also ran a superb race. ‘This mare, thought early last season to |e merely a sprinter, fairly exceeded | all expectations yesterday. “Where js the get of Hastings who will go a route?” asked the experts in| horse lineage before the race. (Gunfire Will Go a houte. Here in one right here in Gunfire? who will not only go a route, but who Is as game a mare as ever stood on trons. The manner in which she hung on to Irlsh Lad yesterday and fought out stride for stride every foot of the last quarter was a sight to stir the moat sluggish heart. And that It was a real drive, a superhuman strug) it were, there was no doubt, for Gunfire and Irish Lad drew far away from the others in the race during that terrific quarter. It was a superb contest. Yardarm's showing was a distinct dis- appointment. He was off very badly. being {niterfered with directly after the start. Articulate, being beside him, euf- fered from the same interference, and both were knocked out of the race to all intents and purposes. The pace set by Irish Lad was «o terrific that neither ever had a chance of xetting anywhere near the leaders. It was expected that Yardarm, being a horse of great speed, would break quickly and avold the jumble. Haack, who rode the colt, 1s notoriously sleepy at the post, however, and Js not keenly alive to the fact that the ptart means much In races on a mile course, Waltneys’ Triumph, It was a great triumph for the Whit- neys. ‘Though the winner was owned by his son, the eider Whitney must have felt a pang of regret that Gunfire should have been beaten by sush a narrow margin. It was his ambition to win the three big spring handicaps, and he began well with Gunfire in the Metro- politan, He must rely now on Goldsmith to win the Suburban. Gunfire takes up eight pounds for winning the Metro- olitan, making her weight in the Suburban 119 pounds. Unless she has greatly changed she is not fond of this kind of weight. Irish Lad also takes up eight pounds, which makes him carry 3 pounds In the big event at Sheeps- head. He will be a phenomenal colt if he can pick up this penalty and dupil- | cate his performance In the Brooklyn. It seems like asking too much of him yet a superd was his race that if he Goes he will receive plenty of backing. The Brooklyn was not only a record- breaking race. but there was a record- breaking attendance. It was the great- est crowd ever seen at this course. WORKOUTS AT SHEEPSHEAD BAY, (Bpectat to The Evening World.) SHEEPSHEAD BAY, May 2%,—Tho conditions of weather and track that prevailed at Sheepshead Bay this morn- ing proved but little temptation to the trainers for fast work. Being Friday the proverbially slow day, there wa. but Uttle in a fast way wanted. The trainers and racers were all on hand at the usual hour, and while the speed shown was for the most part of the mediocre kind, there was enough sharp- ening up to show the racers on to ad- vantage, Trainer J.
