As tongs they were ruined, but on Investigation It was found that by being passed through the heavy pressure rollers the material of which the tongs were made became an exceptionally high grade of steel, As soon as a patent was secured on the process of rolling cold iron into high grade, finely polished steel the firm en- larged, and instead of being discharged | for ruining a pair of tongs the careless millhand was given $20,000 for making the discovery. From thai time the business of the firm increased until, when the United Btates Steel Corporation was formed, the fiom was offered $00,000,000 to come in, but the offer was refused.
