ok Girl with ‘Two Specialties and a Future,” and a ‘‘Play with a| Cherry in It,’’ HY Gen. Washington should have had so much trouble in beating W the British becomes incomprehensible to one who has sat through “My Lady Peggy Goes to Town.” History has done only half its duty in telling us that George III. was a dotard, It has remained for Miss Frances Aymar Mathews to reveal the important fact that all the British were deaf, blind and imbecile. They were—take Miss Frances Aymar Mathews's word for it! She knows, bless your heart! There's nothing about England in George III.’s reign that she does not know, from ‘sdeath to zounds. Lady Peggy puts on her brother's clothes. As he is five feet ten and ashe is. three feet nothing, they necessarily fit ee like a glove; but that’s @ mere detail. ‘The point is that when she has put the clothes on her twin brother doesn't know her. Her lover, from whom she parted only yesterday, doesn’t know her. Sir Robin McTart, who also saw her yesterday, doesn't know her. Nobody knows her. \ Not only don’t they know her, but they don't like her. Her prother conceives .a Jealousy of her, and tries to pick a quarrel. Her lover, taking her for-his rival, - DOES pick:-a quarrbl, and they Aght a duel. *'Bdeath! And I'm not sure but what they aa another in the next act. Zounds! Apropos of anything you like, one ot the characters sings a song pre- dicting the nice things that posterity will say of the times “when George the Third was king,” but forgetting to predict the unavoidable verdict that the whole nation was deaf, blind and imbecile, Bd Cad a Rd a rd Bad HE dlalogue is lovely. Perhaps cunnin’ would be a better word, but Miss Mathews and her friends probably call it “quaint.” How I dote on such phrases as “Ods figh! Saw you ever Diana so beautiful as she is to-night?” ‘Nay, fellow, by my halidome, I care naught for any woman's smile save one!" ‘“Good sooth, sirs, you pleasure us!” and so forth, . Mingled with these cute archaisms are many plums of good twentieth century Newyorkese, I don’t remember specific cases, but the effect would be something like this: “Ods boddikins! this is the limit!” “Sdeath! I mislike the line of hot air thou handest me out!” “Zounds! 'tis a pretty jade and goo-gooeth right heartily!” as Cad a Bad Rad a Cad {8S CECIL SPOONER, who figures as the knickerbockered heroine of M this singular “recitation’’—that’s what the artful programme calls it—is a little grasshopper of a’ girl from Brooklyn with two spe- clalties and a future. The specialties are a hurricane fencing act and an Irish jig. They are both good. i The future—well, that’s not so easy to define, but little Miss Spooner does make you believe that there is something ahead of her outside of rooklyn. a we a a as os a R. H. J. U. V. W. DAM, who wrote “Skipper & Co.,” is the most self- possessed ‘auhor seen in these latitudes for a long time, and not at all averse to the “neat little speech” habit. There 1s clever work in “Skipper & Co.,"’ but dt lacks staying power. It warts out as a satire on Wall street and ends rather tiresomely as a ma- chine-made farce, Mr, Maclyn Arbuckle does all that could be expected for it, and really proves that he has the right kind‘of gifts for thet kind of work. He has a tendency to overdo the “brisk” element, and depend for effect too much on the clapping of his hands and Jegs and other people’s backs, He clapped ‘Mr. Dam.on the back just as that gentleman was beginning his epeech, and a less composed author with a less composed speech would have forgotten his lines, One thing in favor of “Skipper & Co.” 1s that “it has a Cherry tn it.” To be able to play “genteel” comedy in a gentlemanly way—to be youthful, modern, graceful,-quiet, humorous and well-bred—is to be a rarity among actors, and that is where Mr. Charles Cherry counts. Another welcome personality is that of Mr. Prince Miller, who plays the part of an English butler. Mr. Miller was the delightful hall porter in “The Night of the Party,” and it is pleasant to acknowledge such a handsome legezy from thé clever Weedon Grossmith. KATE CAREW.
