Hart and O’Brien Will Meet in Philadelphia Ring and Carter and McVey Will Box Before Los Angeles Club. Two fights between big men will be decided to-night. One bout will be fought in Philadelphia, while the other iit be held in Los Angeles, Cal. Philadelphia Jack’ O'Brien, the middle welght boxer who is anxious to become the mlddle-weight champion of the world, will meet Marvin Hart, of Louls- ville, for six rounds before the Penn Art Club, of the Quaker City, “Kid” Carter, the light heavy-welght, of South Brooklyn, will clash with Sam McVey, the colored heavy-weight, of California, in a twenty-round battle before the Cen- tury A. C., of Los Angeles, Cal. The better contest of the two will probably be that between O'Brien and Hart. The men engaged in a six-round bout several months ago and furnished one of the fastest battles ever witnessed in Phila- delphia. Hart came within an ace of knocking out O'Brien, Carter's Task a Hard One. The battle between Carter and McVey has aroused considerable interest. Car- r bas 4 hard task before him, for Mc- Vey is a much heavier man and also will have the advantage of helght and reach, MeVey 1s regarded as one of the vest big men on/the Coast. California sporting men cannot figure how Carter can possibly beat him. If Carter should beat McVey he will be offered a fight with Jack Johnson, the colored heavy- ght champion of the world. Bernstein Fights To-Night. Another bout which will be decided to- hight will be that between Joe Bern- stein, the east side feather-welght, and “iid” Goodman, of Boston, They will meet in a fifteen-round bout before the ‘terion A. C., of Boston. Bernstein will meet one of the best fighters he has tackled in some time. Goodman has jeen fighting in yreat form and is te- sarded as a likely boy. He is a clover two-handed boxer. Bernstein will have Ito tight his best in order to secure the decision. Herford Will Name Conditions. THE EMERALD. ———— i| The steam yacht Emerald, the. first turbine: riven yacht to cross the ‘At- lantic, 1s now lying at Manning's Basin, Brooklyn, She left Greenock, Scotlands April 17, arriving here In seventeen days, three days late, according to the cap- tain’s reckoning. & The Emeraid has been charterod by George Gould from her owner, it Christopher Furness. She is one of three, turbine yachts in England and was built last fall. She 1s 236 feet in length over all, 28 feet $ inches beam and 18 feet @ inches in depth. She ts rigged as a two» masted schooner and painted white. tending 118 feet amidships, on top of which {s a promenade deck, which, ox- tending from side to side of the yacht 4s carried the entire length of the hou: Forward on this deck Is a teak, deck- house, In which are lounging and nayvi- gating rooms. Every up-to-date luxury and comfort has been installed in the dining, draw- ing, lounging and smoking rooma, into which the deck-house is divided fore and aft of the engine space. The Emerald was thoroughly tried out’ on her way across. She encountered a succession of storms. According te Capt. Todd, the weather could not have: been more severe unless 1t had wrecked the veswel, and through {t all the ens gines behaved beautifully. Not a breake down and no'racing of the propellers and an entire absence of vibration. She steamed at half speed in heavy weather, “turning up" 380 revolutions.
