SNAPSHOTS OF M'GOVERN AND “YOUNG CORBETT” AT THEIR fit tel ey eat FORBES ruc AND WON AGAIN, Johnny Kelly Was No Matobsfor the Bantam-Weight Chame: pion and Was Knocked Outda Ninth Round. , ferry Forbes, the bantem-weight champion, defended his title successfully 'p his bout with Johnny Kelly, of De trot, in Kansas City last night. The latter was knocked out in the ninth round with a right swing on the Jaq. Kelly was outolassed by Forbes. In only one round did he make any kind of a showing. That was in the frst, Re ee Seeman on the jaw. Poter Maher and George Gaedner, the, ight heavy-weight boxer of Lowel! Maee., were to have met tn a tea-round bout before the Allegheny (Pa) A C., but as tnere was only $519 taken in Pt the door, the ‘big men didn’t like the idea of stripping for action for such @ small amount and the contest was called off. Danny Duane, the crack lightweight boxer of this city, was to have met Jimmy Gardner, of Boston, in a twelve- round bout before the Criterion A. C., of Boston, but he was taken seriously Jil a few days ago with the grip and the contest was postponed for two weeks, A bout between Geonge MoFad- den and “Twin” Sullivan was substt- tuted, , McFadden Won, but Got Draw. McFadden took on Sullivan at @ few hours’ notice and was really in no con- dition to box. He made an excellent showing, however. Sullivan was in the very best of condition. MaFadden forced the fighting during the tweivé rounds. The decision was a draw, but McFadden should have won. McFadden returned to New York to train for his bout with Sweeney, which ' M'GOVERN OUT FOR SPRINT ON HIS WHEEL. Away out in San Francisco, next Tuesday night, two of the greatest little men who ever pulled on boxing gloves will meet to settle a long-disputed question of superiority. Those little men are Terry McGovern, the {dot of all followers of the pugilistic game in the East, and “Young Corbett.” of Denver, who sheared ‘Terry of his laurels a year ago ‘ast Thanksgiving Day. Since that battle, which took place in Hartford, Terry nas disputed “Corbett's* claim to any glory. He sald the Denverlte was lucky, and that another meeting would show conclusively that he is the batter man. For months they tried hard for that second meeting, Several times they were matched to meet, but in every instance State authorities interfered with their plans, This time, however, there will be no hitch. Callfornia laws permit the holding of boxing bouts. Only a serious injury to one or the other of the principals could prevent their meeting on Tuesday. Such a thing Is hardly likely to occur, Eaoh ts taking the best of care of himself. Every day both boys pu: in hard work at their training camps on the Coast. Reports from there say both are fit now to get into the ring. Their dally work is hot monotonous to them. That Is due chiefly to the variety of It. Anything that will tend to better their physical condition they do. Climbing trees or moun- tains, engaging in wheelbarrow races and such things are a few of the ways they ivert thelr minds from the fact timt they have to work. And everything of the sort helps to put them in great shape. An idea of the work Terry does can be gleaned from the letter sent to the Sporting Editor of The Evening World by Joe Humphreys, in which he tells of the ‘ttle Brooklynite's daily work in preparing for the bout. News rrom ‘Corbett's’ quarters say he is in prime shape now and that all he needs to do 1s to take off a couple of pounds In order to be at the required weight of 127 pounds at 4 o'clock on TERRY PLAYS BAST BALL FOR PASTIME.
