CRIP FLOODS CITY HOSPITALS. Bellevue Filled to Overflowing— Improvised Beds Hurriedly Arranged to Receive Others Who Are Being Brought In. MANY TRANSFERS MADE. Sudden Increase in Grip Cases At- tributed to the Melting Snow and the Excessive Use of Intoxicants During a Holiday. The grip has taken a fresh hold on New York and the alarming increase in the number of cases is filling hospitals to overflowing. Never has such a seri- ous situation confronted the authorities ‘1 charge of charitable Institutions and Yelevue Hospital {s full and running aver. Spring emattresses are spread through yut all the wards regardlees of their Rmitations or of the specific cases to which they are supposed to be confined. Surgical wards, allie with noncontaglous disease wards, are turned into tempor- ary asylums for grip sufferors, who take their places upon the spring mattresses Placed in any possible spot. At five o'clock last evening 68 grip, cases were registered at the hospital, which brought the number of patients up to 920, exclusive of the insane. As the hospital accommodations are for 920 the new arrivals who came In to-day were taken care of as well as circum- stances provided, A Hard Problem, ‘The authorities are confront Brave probieen under the present tions. The number of grip patients Drought in has raised the number of Patients to 1,000, and the hurrying of the ambulances to the charity boats to transfer patients to Blackwell's Island began early and has kept up all day. The crowding of patients into the am- bulances which take them to the Charity Hospltal brings to light another condi- tion which the flood of grip sufferers at Bellevue caused. Into the ambulances ten patients are crowded, old men, young girls, intoxicated men and wom- en, No time or discrimination in getting the patients t-ansferred from Bellevue's WHO LEFT She Is, and Are Unwilling to Coerce Her, Despite the efforts of Mrs. Heath, the soziety reformer, and editor, to find her sevent vk overflowing wards to the Island js|% she admitted to-day that s| taken. ‘The grip patients are herdeg| had received no word from her. As yesterday was a holiday and the day preceding was Sunday the charity boat was not running and the number of patients that accumulated at the hos- pital caused the deplorable conditions of to-day. Doctors Are Alarmed. Dr. Mabon, Superintendent of Belle- vue, said that if another cold snap fol- lowed the present warm weather, he feared the conditions would be greatly aggravated. The melting of the snow which has caused #o many people to become be- draggled and wet !s responsible, say the doctors, for the sudden increase in grip, but the chief cause is credited to the drinking of whiskey. Following two holidays, when the drinking of whiskey was on a large scale, comes this wave of grip, and to the questions of an Evening World re- porter several doctors at Bellevue gave out the statement that to whiskey as a prime factor is due the great increase dn the number of grip cases, Just as many women as men have beon brought to Bellevue suffering from grip, and many of these were brought in in an intoxicated condition, The old time theory that grip can be cured by drinking has been exploded, and one of the chief things the doctors have to con- tend with in the grip situation ts the excessive use of whiskey, Patients Hustled Away. The poor patients who gre attacked with grip and are taken to Roose- velt, the Presbyterian and the various charitable hospitaly, are all transferred to Belieyue, and are in turn taken to the Island, ‘The authorities, by send- ing the patients in such haste and in such large numbers to Blackwell's Island, are endeavoring by every pos- ain is 0 get Bellevue In proper shape to care for all The alarming outbreak of grip, which bas worried the hospital aut! ities for the last two days, excels the conditions of last year, and the past week's rec- gras show that the disease 19 increas iny "Fhe records at the Board of Health show, for the week ending Jan, 4, that there were thirty-seven deaths.
