$tretcher-Bearer THE WORLD: TUESDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 24, 1903. 2 NEW UPTOWN POST-OFFICES. Committee to Select a Site Re- ports to Congress Favoring Buildings at Pennsylvania and Grand Central Terminals NEGOTIATIONS UNDER WAY. Pennsylvania Offers Two Blocks on| Eighth Avenue for $2,000,000, and/ the Building Then Would Cost| $3,000,000 More. (Special to The evening World.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 24.—The mittee named to select ite site for a new qost-office in New York, to-day made its report to Congress. It recom- mends, as foretold in The Byenin World, the purchase of a site at the terminal of the Pennsylvania Railroad, at Eighth avenue and Thirty-third street, at a cost of $2,000,000 and that It beauthorized to acquire similar facilities at the new Grand Central’ station, at Forty-second street, ‘The committee recommends that no appropriation be made by Congress for @ building at the Pennsylvan! at this session, A suitable building can be erected, It is estimated, for $3,000,000 The report says: “Phe Pennsylvania Railroad Company has offered to sell to the Gov site extending on Eighth a Thirty-first to Thirty-third street a frontage of 460 feet on Eighth av and with a depth of 640 feet on Thirty- first and Thirty-third streets, and on the west line of which a street could be made, thus complying with the provi- sion of the law that the site selected shall have a street on each of its four sides. The actual floor space of a building on this site will be 145,000 feet to each story. “The railroad company has acquired title to nearly all of the land In ques- tion. The price named by the company to the Government is $2,000,000 subject to the use of the company of the space underneath for tunnel or trackage pur- poses, Owing to recent appreciation of property values incident to the loca- tion of the Pennsylvania Rallroad ter- minal equally large and eligible sites adjacent to the one offered would now cost probably $6,000,000. If ihis plan should be adopted, and the post-office bullding located upon this site, the mail ears carried by this company—which, it is estimated, convey to and from the aity of New York over forty per cent, of the mail received and dispatched— will pass Immediately under the post- affice, thereby permitting the mails to] be unloaded directly from the mail cars to elevators running to the floors of the post-office building, and doing away with the necessity for wagon ser- vice." ‘The commission believe that a post com- office building should be erected by Government on @ alte to be secured of the tracks of the New York Genteal Ratiroad or axijacentt to the new station to be erested by that company, and an informal proposition looking to’ such an improvement has been received. “A sultable building worthy of the can’ be erected for about $3,000,000. It will perhaps be inadvisable to make the appropriation for the building at this session. If the plan proposed by your commission shall be carried out— which includes connecting the principal post-offices in the clty by Pneumatic tubes as station H is now connected with the main post-offlce— the problem of handling the mail in this most important city will have been solved for many years to come.” GAMBLING-HOUSE SERVANTS LIABLE, |: Justice Davis So Decides in Dis- missing Writ in the Case of Buroridge’s Doorkeeper.
