Roche (iormeriy Sir Rooke)........117 + gus mile aud an elghrh, Jone 5 it | ' ‘ The statement below was made hy Frank Erne to an Evening World reporter in the ex-light-weight champion’s home in Buffalo. Erne has retired from the prixe ring for 00d and all, but itis practically a settled fact that he will act as tutor for Jack Munroe when the latter begins train- ing for the heavy-weights of the pugilistic world. BY FRANK ERNE. Tt Is my honest and candid opinion that Jack Munroe stands an excellent chance of defeating James J. Jeffries in a fight of twenty-five rounds with the gloves. When I vay this, don't think that T am only guessing at it, for Iam not. I know Munroe much better than most people believe, and I know that he will give a splendid account of himself If he ever measures blows with Jeff in the roped arena, SAW MUNROE WHEN HE WAS AN AMATEUR. Scme people are inciined to doubt Munroe's ability, but I have considerable faith in him, I saw him win the amateur championship at Frisco when he was first starting in, and I sald at the time that he would make a good man some day. When I read of him staying with Jeffries for four rounds I was not sur- prised In the least. I will admit as Munroe starda to-day he is not @ champion by any means. Tle 18 Jacking in that one essential point which makes, a successful priefighter— experience. Munroe has not shaken the hand of that one great professor, and until he does one can't expect him to dofeat men lke Jeffries, Sharkey and McCoy, who lsave had years of experience in the mitt game. “Ifyou take Munyoe in hand and train him, what will be the first thing you will do to make him a succes: MUST GET SHIFTY ON HIS FEET. “Well, you know I have made no plana to train Munroe. If I were to take him in hand to-morrow the very frst thing I would teach him to do is get shifty on his feet, He is fairly clever at the present tme, but not anywhere near what he will have to be in order to beat Jeffries, “What Munroe needs t» some one to teach him how to fetnt and jab. He has & powerful punch in eithor hand, and if It is possible for him to lear how to be clever and use his strength in a way to bring about the best result, 1 think he will be @ second Jeffries, or at least a food man tn fistiana. “What blows would you teach him to use on Jeffries?’ T would teach him to guand Jeffries's left lead for the body, TEACHER. of the champlon’s best blows whilo in action, and land with his own left on the Jaw. Jeffries used this body -blow on Sharkey, and it had good effect. Munroe would hdye to get out of the way of that punch unless Jeff would beat him. THE PUNCHES ERNE WOULD TEACH HIM. “In onder for Munroe to win or make a good Might against Jeffrles he will have to learn to get inside of Jeff's left arm thai he keeps out in front of him: I would try and teach Munroe to side-step quick as Jeff came at him, and cou ter hard with a short rigit-hand hook to the jaw, at the same time holding safe Jeff's right-hand uppercut,” : "Would you teach Jack any particular blow in order to drop Jem?” | “I think a blow to the jaw polnt or over the heart 1s about the best a man | can get in on another. 1 show In one of these pictures how Mu ul guard | Jeffries's right-hand uppercut and counter with his right to the jaw or body. HAMMERING ON JEFF'S JAW. i “A good, stiff punch on the jaw will bring a man down he \s or how strong. I would advise Munroe to keep Jaw, countering us the big fellow came ini “Another thing which would be valuable to Munroe would be to get in close and pound with both hand: punching away in the region of the heart I think hi than if he attempted to beat Jeff at any other game. “In your opinion, has Munroe the punch to beat Jeffries?” ‘As Munroe stands to-day, practically a beginner at the game, punch that would knock out any two fighters if he could only be proper way to use It. MUNROE NEEDS THREE MONTHS’ WORK. “Give Munroe three months of good, fast coaching and training and I am sure you will find a different man In him—one who will make his mark In the ranks of the heavy-welght knights of pugdom " “Ina fight against Sharkey how would you advise M “Play a waiting game by all means, Sharkey !s a dangerous wallop at all times, No one can afford to take ch expect to win, He is a rusher from the drop of the hat, and in @ fight with ‘Tom would be to counter on the Jaw and body, could, as Tom rushed him," “What about his chances against Kid McCoy or Corbett?" “Less than they would be against a man like Jeffries or Sharkey, and the Kid are altogether too fast for Munroe, I doubt If Jack could get to either of them with a devisive punch, They are too clever on their feet for him 10 ng away on Jeff's ina fight against Jer! to the heart. If he keeps would find it easter to win he has aj aught the nroe to fight?" ng fellow with a es with him and nroe's best game or wherever we Corbett [time comes Munroe will be taught all these things which Is one! yourself what a mere miner can do at this glove game." He will do better with a man slower and not so fast at the feinting game. “But what's the use of talking about what I think he can do. When the proper and then you can see for Feb, 2, the date set for the opening of ‘the Evening World's big tree bowling tournament, will find everything readiness for the event, ‘The commi'tre 14 10% arranging the schedule for ihe opening week and the yamen of the teams to play tne first five nights will be announced at an early date.
