The man who committed suicide In Bangor, Me., last week under the name of C. H. Guild, was Alexander M. Bar- tow, formerly cashier of the Kerito Wire Company, of No. 203 Broadway, this city, a fugitive from Justice, charged with the embezzlement of $16,000 from the concern. A woman who caused his downfall cast him off when all his money was gone, and he killed himself in despair, Up to three years ago Bartow was an honest, hard-working business man. He had a summer home at Englewood, N. J., where his father, John A. Bartow, re- sides. His home fn this clty was at No. 15 East Forty-fifth stret, where he lived with his wife and family. It Was Fatal Meeting. ‘While driving on @ country road near Montclair he met Mrs. Mary Pickernell, a divorced woman, well-known In that nelghborhood. She was driving and her harness had broken. Bartow fixed the harness, and in that way began an ac- quaintanceship that drove him to @ sul- cide's grave. He became infatuated with the wom- an, but found thet he could not su>- port her and his own family,on his salary. He took money from the firm, but no suspicion attached to him be- cause he was careful in his methods and punetilious in his attendance to business. By the irony of fate good fortune hastened his downfall.
