THE MURDERER THEN FLED. His Father Accomp:nied Him and His Mother, Under Arrest, Saye Killing Followed the Brandishing of a Razor. ‘The murder of Dominto Varuolo, a linguist and prosperous real estate and investment broker, furnishes the police with the theory of a plot, the intrigue, daring and successful execution of which have fow paratels in efther fic- tion or history, The city ts being searched to-day for Gluseppe Pasca, his business partner, and Louis Pasca, the latter’s son. In cells at the East One Hundred and Fourth streot station are Mrs. Pasca, who says her eon hid in ambush be- hind the portieres and fired the ehots through the curtains, and her beautiful daughter, Clotida, whom the police give an important part in the plot of the tragedy. Detective Sergeant Pet- rosini relates the plot briefly as fol- lows: Story of the Tragedy. “Clotilde was passionately In love with Varuolo, who gave her lessons in Eng- leh, A month ago bis wife and children suddenly appeared, they having come from Italy, and he was compelled to cease any attentions he may have be- stowed upon Clotiida. Revenge, perhaps for the decolt Varuolo had practiaed on Clotilda, led Gluseppe Pasoa to Invite Varuolo to his home at No. 816 Bast One Hundred and Thirteenth street, last night. Varuolo was left alone in the parlor with Clotiida, She was very friendly. A sofa had been placed with {ts back againat the portleres which separated the parlor from the next room, On this she Invited him to sit. “What caresses and loving embraces were exchanged there we do not know. But suddenly Clotilda, upon a signal, leaped from the sofa and as she stepped aside a pistol shot sounded from back of the portieres. Varuolo, with a bul- lethole in the back of his head and the bullet in ‘his brain, dropped senseless to the floor. The assassin stepped trom belind the curtains, stood over his prostrate victim and fired another shot into him, Then he fied." Decoyed to His Death. And the detective recites facts which he belleves sustain this remarkable plot and its exeoution. Policeman Beller was passing the house at the time and on hearing the shots he ‘ran into the hall. There he met BDivin! Kiehl, charged with her mother, Mrs, Addie Fenner, with caus- ing the death of her husband, Will Kiehl, by polzoning, last February, was brought into the County Court to-day by Sheriff Overton on a writ of certio- rari issued by Judge Joseph B. Eggles- ton, Tho writ was secured last night by Attorney Rowland L, Davis for Mrs, Ktehi, It 1s to ascertain why Mrs, Kleh] fs held and wil! also apply to her mother, aithough the latter is not men- tioned in this proceeding. Attorney Davis contends that Coroner Santee had no right to order the arrest of his client on the Information adduced at the inquest. One of his grounds Is that part of the inquest was secret and therefore illegal. It was not expected that a hearing in the case would be held until after the deliberations of the Grand Jury, which meets Monday, but, to the sur- prise of every one, Coroner Santee has started in immediately on a hear- ing of the evidence, having the Dis trict Attorney question the witnesses Important and probably sensational developments fre promised. Not only the death of William Kiehl is ‘involved but also that of his brother, Adam, who also died from arsenical poisoning. Besides these, the authoritles are in- vestigating the deaths of at least three other persons, and it is intimated that the Coroner and the District-Attornoy will make accusations soon which will clear away many of the mysteries sur- rounding the deaths of @ number of persons, 2 Wheu Coroner Santee opened the hear- ing yesterday morning it was supposed to be merely the arraignment of Mrs. Kiehl and her mother, but he imme- diately commenced reading the testi- ony of witnesses before his jury.’ This brought a vigorous objection from At- torney Davis, wao objected so enegertic- ally that the Coroner ordered a sheriff to eject the lawyer from the room. But the deputy vored in time that he had no right to do #0, and the lawyer remain After the ovidence of thres witnesses had been gone into the Coroner suddenly postponed the hearing. It is expect that Monday the most important devel- opments in the case will be presented. Byen should Mrs, Kiehl and her mother be discharged on the writ of certiorari the District-Attorney is expected to bring such action as will result in thelr immediate rearrest. It 1s known, however, that for the next week this community will be treated to a full exposition of the plots which the changes to Mrs. Coroner. Kiehl and ‘her mother, and they are sald to be so dee; and intricate and to have been so well executed as to baf- fle for a long time the most experienced detectives, “Never has such a network of plots been known before," says Coroner San- tee. “The Borgias were amateurs.
