Late Christmas merrymakors in Unton Bquare were startied by the report ef a revolver shot, and a big crowd surrounded Harry Kane when he fell to the pavement with a bullet wound in ‘bis thigh. He was taken to Bellevue, where he is being held to face a charge of attempting to rob a clothing store at No. 42 Broadway. Kane is a printer, but was out of work. He became despondent because he had no home on a cold Christmas night and determined to get a warm bed and something to eat at any cost. So he got a hammer and cracked a section out of a plate-glass window at the clothing store. ‘The nolse of the brenking glass at- tracted the attention of the watchman ‘on the inside, and as Kane put his hand through the hole the watchman fired. ‘The bullet struck Kane In the thigh, but he ran for almost a block before he sank down exhausted. At the hospital Kane said he had been living on free lunches for a week and had spent his last cent. He had no place to sleep and determined to try the robbery. He said ho thought he would gain the desired end in any case. If he'escaped he could pawn what he stole, and !f he was caught a warm prison cot awaited him.
