; MEAT BARONS ROG NEWYORK Evening World’s Investiga- tions Show There Is No Excuse for the Exor- bitant Prices Maintained Here by the Trust. RATES LOWER OUT WEST. Receipts Are Heavy and a Fall of Three Cents a Pound Is Reported, but There Has Been No Decrease in This City. Investgations made by the Evening ‘World show that despite the fact that ‘beef has decreased in price in Chicago ‘and Kansat City, from which markets the meat svpply of this city is secured, there has been no corresponding de- crease in price in New York. Beet is at the prohibitive price that has reigned ever since the rise of months ago, and the condition that caused such an outburst of popular in- ignation at that time prevails to-day. ‘The Beef Trust, in othér words, is us strong as ever, notwithstanding that its methods have been exposed and attempts hhave been made to check it, So vehement ‘Were the denunciations of this combina- tion when the price of beef was put be- yond the reach of the poor that It ap- peared that the combination would be broken up. But there interposed a hap- pening that drove frofi the public mind all thoughts of the Beef Trust and has kept {t out—the coal strike. Lost Sight of Meat. ‘This was a matter of so much public interest through the summer and fail that the meat question was lost sight of. ‘With the advent of cold weather the acarcity of coal became the crying need of the hour, and the price of beef was Jos} sight of altogether. Even the an- nouncement from the West that tho price of beet has gone down has been practically overlooked in the coal short- age. Qf course the beef magnates are on hand with excuses. ‘They say that while beet 1s lower on the hoof there are not enough cars to transport a sufficient sup- ply to this market to affect the price. As a matter of fact the Beef Trust control: its!own cars and could place as ‘nuch meat in this market as it desired. The Rees is to hoodwink the people of 1 York as long as possible and gain tional profit from the exorbitant ices demanded here as against the lower purchase price of the raw product at the packing houses. ‘Once more does the coal strike come im handy as a peg ueon which the beet magnates hang their subterfuges. They gay that so many cars are hauling coal that the raflroad lines are blocked and that this interferes, with the shipinents of beef. So the misfortune of New York in being compelled to pay prices for beot that bar it from the tables of thousands is played against its twin misfortune— the exorbitant domands of the operators and dealers in coal for that urgent negessity of life. vening World's Inveastigation. ‘emp Gorrespondenis of the Evenlog World “Ya Kansas City and Chicago have Inves- tigated the situation and report that thére are plenty, of fat cattle on the ranges; that the farmers are anxious to ahip, but that the beef barons, in order to Keep up prices If possible, have ad- Viged thelr agents in the field to buy as few cattle as possible, A realization of the way the managers of the Beef Trust are gouging New York may be gained from the following despatches. —_—— MEAT TRUST DODGES, AS IT ALWAYS DOES. nd (Special to The Evening World.) CHICAGO, Dec. 24.—Notwithstanding the substantial decline in live stock quotations, retailers of the country have failed to make corresponding reductions in price to the consumer. ‘The retailers claim they have received little or no concessions from the packers, Packing interests say that prices lo- cally are easier, and that there 1s no reason why the reduction should not be:felt in the East. When asked why, in,view of liberal recelpts, a further re- duction is not made, they dwell on the advanced price of labor and the difl- culty experienced in moving fresh meat shipments over Eastern lines, ‘The discharge of 100 men in the can. ning department of Armour & Co. yes- a nearly precipitated a general tenday Deiring the busy season the em- loyess work Sundays, Owing to a mis Phderstanding they failed to report last Bunday and wero discharged. BEST ISSUES FEEL EFFECT. 'Ten per cent. call money and the approach of the holiday season with prospective squeezes in money until the year end transactions are over, put an end to boom prices to-day. Under this combination of depress- ing influences the market became dull and featureless, the bulls trying occasionally to get out a little “Christmas money,” and the bears contenting themselves with holding their strategic position. Brooklyn Rapid Transit was the biggest feature of the market. Under the fostering care of the strong B. R. T. pool it was boosted from 65 to 68 1-4 in the first two hours of trading. This was accom- plished chiefly through the good re- ports of recent earnings. The pool skilfully utilized, too, the report that the Pennsylvania Rall- road has acquired a large if not a controlling interest, in the company, and will utilize it In connection with its North and East River tunnel fran- chises. Holiday dulness affected most of the stocks. Brokers were desirous of either keeping out of the market un- til the call money flurry is over or selling the stocks they held. This feeling caused fractional re- cessions in Atchison, St. Paul, the United States Steel shares, Baltimore & Ohio, Union Pacific, Rock Island, Texas & Pacific and the common and preferred shares of Wabash. The hard coal roads were firmly held. Generally Stock Exchange gossip connects them in a positive way with a big pending consolidation of anthracite carriers in which J. Pierpont Morgan is named as the underwriter. The sudden boom in Erle stock lent additional strength to the ru- mor of combination. Wasserman’s bid of 34 for 6,000 shares, or any part of it, for Erie common caused holders to become more confident. Since the pool in Sugar began its operations, with Washington as the active end, something has gone wrong. The stock has broken three points in two days, and, although it was advanced fractionally, it was one of the weakest issues on the list. The pool started to boom the stock to 135, but in the general iusa to get holiday profits it receded from 130 to 127, and was irregular to-day at an advance of a point. Figures showing a marked increase in the exports for the week were the cause of the fractional advance In many railroad issues. The total for the week was $11,117,699, against $9,965,593 last week and $10,889,981 for the corresponding week last year. Cheerfulness due to this good showing was somewhat dampened by the transfer of $200,000 more to New Orleans. This was offset, however, by the telegraphic transfer here of $250,- 000 Yukon gold deposited in the Sub- Treasury at ‘Frisco. Predictions of a poor bank state- ment helped promote dulness and the early celebration of Christmas was @ good thing for many of the traders who wanted to protéct their holdings. — Last year in this week the surplus reserve of the Associated Banks in- creased $2,106,025,, bringing up that total to $7,891,350. The reserve last Saturday was $8,093,600. STOCKS WEAK ON THE CURB. Orders Light and Few Bulle in the Outside Market. | ‘The ourb market was weak to-day.
