TO INVESTIGATE | LYING LETTERS. The Postmaster-General Takes a Hand in the Chicago Anony- mous Letter Mystery and Or- ders a Report. | HOW CLUE WAS OBTAINED. Author of Letters Showed Knowl- edge of Private Affairs of Dr. Henrotin Which Led Him to Sus- pect One of His Patients. OHICAGO, Dec. 4—That the local postal authorities are in confilct with| the local police and the leading society men who have banded together to ex- pose Chicago's troublesome anonymous letter-writer became apparent to-day. Word was rece'ved from Washington that Postmaster-General Payne had or- dered the Chicago Inspector's office to be investigated and a full report made to him of Inepector's Stuart's course in dealing with the unknown mischtef- naker, Inspector Stuart declares he Is glad Washingotn has called for a report from him. In discussing the matter he admitted that he had evidence that all of the letters had not been traced by the same hand. He claims that three separate and Aistinct types of chirography appear in the ietters that have caused so many heartaches and so much domestic strife within the last four years. In proof of this he produced letters addressed to Mrs. Horatio N. May and Dr. Davis, both of scurrilous character, but evi- dently not written by the same person. Chief of Police O'Neil, on the con- trary, is convinced by his Investigation that the letters have all been written by @ mentally troubled woman of high social position Itving on the north side, and his men have worked persistently along this line. Handwriting Expert Engaged. Henry L. Tolman, one of the experts of the Molineux trial, admitted to-day that he had been engaged two years ago to rolve the mystery and had suh- mitted reports to both Dr. Henrotin and Inspector Stuart. He was satisfied that the woman suspected by Dr. Hen- rotin was the author of the letters. He aald: “Dr. Henrotin came to my office with @ number of anonymous letters and a dozen or fifteen social Jetters, which had been selected as samples of the writing of women who corresponded with mem- bers of his family. “[ found (hat the same hand thet penned one of tha social letters was re- sponsible for the troublesome unsigned ones, and so reported. She is #0 orostrated that she has gone to the home of her sister, Mrs. Horatlo N. May, another victim, and has denied herself to all callers on the advice of her sister, who fears ahe may collapse under the strain incidental to the an- noying situation. Mrs. McIntyre has an excellent social position. Mow Dr. Henrotin Obtained a Clue, Dr. Henrotin, whose interview wired to The Evening World yesterday created great interest here because of his pro- fessional and social prominence, admits that he got on the track of the letter writer through her discussion of facts that he thought were known only to hi ister.
