2 a J wy EAVY-WEIGHTS TOYS 10 HM. Shaw, the Columbia Hercules, Could Juggle Four Men Like Glass and Lift Six Bill Dev- erys. BREAKS COLLEGE RECORDS. Grip of Little Strong Man Would Make Your Hand Fe: is if a Barrel of Flour Had Been Rolled On It. Frank 8. Shaw 1s Columbia's strongest man, and without a doubt the strongest man In any of the colleges. All records of the local university have been smashed with ridiculous ease by this young man and he will soon go atfer the collegiate records of the world. Shaw, who ts a senlor In the Solence School, ts the last Person one would pick out as a strong man. Slight of stature and below the average height, he looks more like a runner than a heavy weight lifter. Small as he looks—he is only 5 feet 8—he could pick up four men aa big as Glass, the giant Yale guard, and put them on his back without any exertion. Six men iike Bill Devery could be Strapped together and then the little Columbia man could lift them from the floor with his legs and pick up a few hundred pounds as well with his arms. The grip of one of his hands, ‘f he should clasp yours tightly, would be about the same as if you let a barre! of flour roll upon it. Figuring on the Haryard Plan of measurements Shaw has scored a total of 2,049 points, just 100 points less than the world's championship figures. The ease with which he broke the Columbia record of 1,918 points Indicates that he will soon be the strongest college man in the world, Shaw's development ai trong man has been wonderful. Last year he was ~# poor fourth among the Columbia men, yet this year he has increased his strength 314 points. In the recent test Shaw lifted, without harness, 1,852 pounds with his legs, With his back he picked up 704 pounds Acd the strength of his grip in elther and was 102 pounds. His wonderful have a capacity of 264 cubte He has “dipped” sixty-two ies and then, without pausing, gone Gown an additional forty-two times. ‘The best previous record was fifty-four aad thirty-nine, Shaw's record for lifting with his legs is greater than the collegiate champlon- ship record, and his upward push pow- ers also top all others, The Columbia champion is just twen- five years of age and welghs but 142 pounds, He makes no special effort to develop his strength except to take the usual gymnasium exercise at the col- lege, Practically all of Shaw's weight les in his upper body, his deep chest and muscular arms alding him in making the great number of pull-ups and push- ‘ups, Despite his eiim legs, he succeeded in making the greatest leg-lft as yet recorded at Columbia. Shaw's chest measures 9 Inches; Mgbt forearm, 11 inches; left, 111-4; bi- ceps, both 131-2 inches; calves, 133-4 Inches, and thighs, 20 1-2 each. Shaw is a splendid wrestler, and has never been thrown by anybody of his Weight. He has been practising on the strength machines for two years etead- ily and ts likely to do 2,200 points by next spring. BUSIEST NIGHT FOR FIGHTERS.
