Wall Street Walts for News of Big Traction Deal, While Issue Goer ’ Boaring—Gould and Belmont Still Slient on Agreement. Manhattan noared to 168 on the Stock Wxohange this afternoon, making an- record in the recent @ensational movement of the ‘L” @hares. The point reached to-day ts the highest since 1893. The stock was taxen in good sized blocks and Wall street, watching the Brice jump, looked for a statement on the big traction deel now pending. Neither Mr. Gould nor Mr. Belmont ‘was ready to talk, however, and the brokers concluded that the insiders who control the situation were profiting by thelr knowledge of the progress of the deal. The stock started its kiting after reaching 1553-4 to-day when a drive was made for it, blocks ranging from 2,600 down changing hands. After touching 168 It dropped back, but made another gain, going up to 186. Gould brokers wore the buyers to-day and the Rockefeller interests were re- ported heavy purchasers. Helps the Market. Pennsylvania and New York Central were firm and higher to-day, with enough activity displayed to revive the story ‘that they would be shown to ha’ largo onough holdings in Manhattan “L" to benefit substantially through any deal that is made. HOT DRIVE FOR PROXIES. Railroad Magnates, Unable to Agree on Traffic Division, Will See It Out at Annual Meeting of Com- pany—Gain for Osgood? A question of veracity {s Involved In the latest turn In the fight for control of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Com- pany. In the scramble for proxies to be voted at the annual meeting of the con- cern in December, George Gould de- clares that his name was used without authority by the Harriman-Hawley con- tingent, and he now figures as an op- ponent of the big magnates and stands with President Osgood, of the road, who recently routed John W. Gates, Hawley, for himself and Harriman, re- torts that Gould agreed with them a few weeks ago to join in the reach for proxies, and even selected a tloket to be voted for at the election, Mr. Gould naming his own representatives. This spill in the Gould-Harriman- Hawley ranks surprises Wall street, as {t was supposed the trio were after con- trol of the company, Intending to divide {ts traffic among themselves. Now that they have clashed, sensational develop- ments are looked for. It {s surmized that they could not agree on a division of traMc and will fight {t out at the annual meeting. ‘The sides as arranged now are fig- ured as Gould and Osgood against Harriman, Hawley, Gates, Blair and Mitchell. Gould in a call to stockholders for proxies says. “During a recent abence from the city I ascertained that my name had been used in a circular dated Nov. 10 requesting your proxi This call was made without my knowled consent or authority, neither the cir- cular letter nor the form of proxy therewith inclosed having been submit- ted to me.” The Gould call ts also George F. Butler and others. Harriman and Hawley follow this with @ call in which they say: n_view of a misunderstanding as to Mr. Gould's desire to Join in the request heretofore made for proxies covering stock of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Com- any, the undersigned will esteom it a favor {f you will execute the iuclosed Pair, Hawley added to this ip an inter- vit (eeu in which he declared that Gould met him, another man and Harrl- man in the latter's office early’ this month and agreed on the, ticket as ated, sth rominent member of the Gould faction in. explaining the action George Gould sald: ‘areful reading of the proxies ri quested by Messrs.
