COAL SHORTAGE UNTIL-NEXT YEAR. Uperators Declare They Are Do- ing Their Best for New York, but Are Unable to Catch Up with Demand. SITUATION HARD TO MEET. Denial Made that Anthracite Is Being Held, but Normal Conditions Can- not Be Resumed for Two Months: —Retailers Agree with Them. Coal operators and retaUers freely ad-| mit now that the shortage of coal will continue until Jan. 1 at least, ‘They say that a combined effort Is being made to supply the needs of New Yorkers, but that the demand owing to strike condi- tions ts away beyond them. It 1s claimed that 35,000 tons a day ts Now belng delivered here, but all the anthracite 1s snapped up immediately it arrives and doled out to waiting thou- sands, Very few, if any, get the amount they ask for or expect, and some re- celve none at all, so that the dissatistac- tion !s general and pronounced, The mine owners declare that they will gradually increase the output to New York and hold that they are now giving this city all that is possible. Shipments from the mines to this port, it ts claimed, do not mean that: all the coal coming this way remains here. New York being a distributing point, anthracite {s sent to Eastern States and other points, but the operators say the people of the metropolis are getting thelr share. The statement made by some of the retailers that coal 1s being stored at Polnts near this city 1s denied, the an- swer being that only a sufficient supply for locomotives and general railroad uses are unloaded.
