ALL THE LATEST NEWS OF THE BUSINESS WORLD. 1 STOCKSCAIN, VAN SANT CO} 4 SUT FALL BACK’ ANEAD OF MORGAN Final Buying Movement Did Not , Hold in the Market that Had ( Proved Disappointing All the Day. LONDON IN THE TRADING. | Dealings in the stock market to-day were again disappointing. While the Opening was generally firm jt was al- most without exception under London quotations and there was @ noticeably ‘strong desire to sell. The exceptionally poor weekly state- ments of the Bank of England and the Bank of France aided the beara in or- ganizing a concerted raid upon weak { spots which looked responsive to at- tack, Both institutions showed decreases in the important items, indicating that each financial centre might soon call upon New York for money to meet Its obligations. ‘The effect of the statement of the Bank of France was offset, however, by the apparenuly well founded xeport that a number of big international banking houses in Wall street had bor. : rowed large sums from France and had used the money to meet Its most press- ing obligations in London. Conditions were a trifle more favora- ble for gold exports to-day, although the rates on the triangular basis may \ not approach for ten days the point , where gold may be sent out at a prolit. ; Sterling exchange was stronger, al- though the call was not pronounced. Demand was quoted at 4.8685 and 4.809, while sixty day bills were 4.8950 and 48575. Paris exchange on London was . slightly lower, 4 Call money here was plentiful at 5 and $1-2 per cent,, with the expectation that rates would rule to-morrow and Baturday, Time money was nor sought encugh to make it a featur London traded moderately and fol- lowed quotations closely. ‘here was a Wick market there for 1.00 to 2,000 es of any active stock, ‘Liquidation by the Western contingent of speculators was a pronounced f ture. The Westerners sold long stocks Yeuterday, but to-day they sold heavily Bh the sort side. "ro-day's buying was good. ‘The ab- orpuio of stocks by big insiitutions ‘was steadily continued all day. Brokers did not bid much but they took all ofter- ae. of dividend paying or active stocks. the opening market the railroad showed some puzzling inconsist- Teles. Canadian Pacific, for instance, Was one, point higher in London, | gained only, 1-2 point here, Louisville and Nashville, 1-2 higher in London, was i lower here, j ing was the weakest issue in the toad “list. It. ragged heavily” ‘on iquidatin- sales and touched the lowest re for months. re & Ohio was subjected to Reavy, selling pressure, chleily {rom the Gates faction and it gave way nearly two points under Hquidation. Missouri Pacific, which yesterday showed new energy and led the mar- ket in the strength of its advance, was to-day weak and lifeless. It open: ed at 1081-4, gained nearly a point and then reacted. The industrial Ist was weak again with the exception of American Cotton Oll, That led the list in point of ac- tivity, advancing 3 points on the decla~ ration of an extra dividend of 4 per gent. on the common stock. United States Stee! issues, both com- mon and preferred, held at a slight ad- vance over yesterday's close, but the aaies Were extraordinarily large. In- vestment buying was a feature in these atocks. 4 ‘Amalgamated Copper advanced slight- |,» ly over yesterday's low figures, but was @til! weak as the result of the election du. Montana. Shortly before the close of the market there was a renewal of buying, and as @ result the whole list went up. Hill, who were outwitted by the nominee whom they were fighting. The Governor, who has been opposing the great railroad merger, wanted to talk to the people alorfg the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad, It waa his desire to tell them what a bad thing the North- ern’ Securities Company {1s and how nezessary it was for the voters to up- hold the men who wero fighting it. He would, he planned, charter a spe- clal train and in that way make a flying trip. The train was ordered apd ar- rangements for the tour made. Then J. J. Hill found st out. He dla not want Van Sant to be heard, and, although Interested In the road, he had no authority to stop the train, Morgan was the man to Interfere, and as a consequence a lively corre- spondence was opened by wire between Hill and the Wall Street magnate. Would Mr. Morgan please force Mr. Van Sant to ride on a regular passenger train or ~-'k? Would he see to it that Van Sant’s awful heresy be kept from the voters? Mr. Morgan would, and wired frantic- ally: “Cancel the order for that Van Sant train at once.” But even Mr. Morgan cannot do all things. ‘The train was already on its way and Gov, Van Sant was making his speeches. ‘This was made clear when the following telegram flashed over the wires to New York: “Deeply regret impossibility of comply- ing with your request. Contract already signed, money pald In advance and train on its way north when your message was received.” ‘These facts have come out now that Gov, Van Sant nas been re-elected.
