FIVE YEARS FOR THE ANARCHISTS MacQueen and Grossman, De- clared Guilty of Inciting Riot in Paterson, Hear Their Sen- tence Calmly. APPEAL FILED FOR THEM.) (Spectal to The Evening World.) PATERSON, N. J., Oct. 81—Willlam MacQueen and Rudolph Grossman, the anarchists convicted on charges of rlot- s ing and malicious mischief at the Gaede, ‘Bamford and Hall mills on the morning of June 18 last, were to-day sentenced to five years in prison on the two con- victions. Before pronouncing sentence the Court Mstened to an eloquent plea in the pris-| oners’ behalf made by Lawyer Z. M.! ‘Ward, in which it was impressed on the/ Court that Grossman was not present) on the day of the riots and that Mac- 4 Queen had only counselled peaceful i measures. | Ph Judge Scott in sentencing the men i @aid he saw no reason to distinguish be- | twéen them; they were both guilty and by their actions on the day of the riots | | ‘had placed a stain on the name of Paterson. He said that if both men had stayed away from Belmont Park no disorder of any kind would have occurred. The Court was convinced, Judge Scat: said, that both knew what would nappin when they made thelr inflamatory speeches. Both MacQueen and Grossman re- ceived their punishment with a show! of calmness. Immediately after sentence Lawyer | ni Ward moved an appeal to the Court| Tal of Errors and Appeals and the men} i} furnished new bail bonds in the same | amount ae the old ones for thelr appear: | ance when wanted. In the regular] course of events the appeal will not be 2 Geolded upon in tess than a year, Philip | Geyer, sr. the wine merchant of Tale- don, qualifed again as the anarchists’ bondsman | The lizhtnese of the sentence surprised most people, who were of the opinion that the court would deal ha the convicted men. ‘The charge, that of atrocious assa pattery on Officer Robinson and Harr, L. Harris, will no doubt be nolle pros: qued hy Prosecutor Emley. Maciueen and Grossman, after thelr ew %<!l bonds were filled out and ap- Proved left at once f Yew York.
