> WILL RUN AWA WITH HER SAILOR Florence Merritt, Thirteen Years Old, Repels Mother in Court and Declares She Will Elope as Soon as Free. WROTE LOVE NOTES TO HIM. Parent Asked for Her Commitment When Jockie Was Discharged, but Magistrate Would Only Send Her te Children’s Society for a Week. Alfred Walsh, the dashing young ma- fine to whom thirteen-year-old Flor- ence Merritt, of Brooklyn, wrote love letters, was dismissed to-day on a eharge of vagrancy in the Myrtle Ave nue Court. He Immediately disap- peared, but Mrs. Merritt asked at once that her daughter be committed on a charge of waywardness. “What has. she done?” aeked the Magis‘ rate, “Well, she stayed away from school and spent one night without permission at the honse of @ neighbor.” “I can't see any great waywardness in that, but I will turn the girl over for @ week to the Children’s Society," was the Magistrate's reply. Child Repels Her Mother. Then the girl burst into tears. her mother sought to comfort he Tepelled her and between her sobs, “As soon as I am out I will go straight to Mr. Waish and we will be married. Nothing can ever part us. ‘ove him dearly and he has always been xood and kind to me. “I suppose he will be punished for this, amd I want to say that it iq all my fault. He is an honest, nice young man. Not a word has he ever said to me that @ny one could find the least fault with.” Then Florence was led away to be turned over to the Children's Society, and as,she passed out of the door, she Tepeated: “I love Alfred, and I will marry him.” Met Him at a Party. * At a panty in Williamsburg young Walsh, a marine in th Yard, and she, fell in love with him— just as much fn love as a twelve-year- ‘4 girl can. Most of his time was spent behind the big wall of the Navy- Yard, ang as she could not see her , often this little schoolgirl opened her heart to him in letters. They are remarkably clever letters for a Uttle schoolgirl and they are sweetly pure and simple. But in the eyes of the law this love affafr in miniature 1s a misdemeanor and Florence is under the care of the Gerry Bociety, while Alfred has been cooped up in @ cell in Reymond Street Jail, her anxtety to see her sweetheart went to the home of a Mrs. Gr. sell street, near the Navy+ mained*there all night witho! her parents. , No matter what happens in the Magis- trate's court to-day nothing quite so re- markable as the letters written by Fior- ence to her sailor sweetheart will de- velop, unless it be more letters. Here are some of the letters written fn the class-room while Miorence’s teacher had her back tuned. Love’s Drawbacks.
