J., 18 the heroine of her class. The cause of it all is her attack on a brutal driver who was be- laboring his horse with a club. Miss Burton was on her way to school when she saw a teamster trying to force @ weak horse to pull a heavy loa up @ steep hill. The animal had failed several times to move the vehicle, when the driver selzed a club and began beating the horse unmercifully, ‘This so enraged Miss Burton that she ran to the rescue. With blazing eyes sho called upon the man to desist, and when he pald no heed to her she took the club from him and rained blows upon hie shoulders. The driver made no effort to resist, but contented himself with trying to ward off the blows. From sheer exhaustion Miss Burton finally desisted, and the man was allowed to eo with @ warning never to beat hie horse again.
