To the doubter who thinks woman Is not capable of keeping a secret refer- ence can be made to Mrs. Charles- R. Beardorough, who for seven years has given her friends the impression that her name was Mrs. Anna V. Gibbs. If additional prof be wanted two sisters of Mrs, Scarborough can be pointed to as examples. When he comes home he says these friends and not himself should sign the checks for the congratulatory rounds. Notwithstanding the fact that the @nnousicement has been publicly made there is still an alr of mystery about the case and the principals and the very few who have guarded thelr secret well are reticent. Mrs. Scarborough ts @ partial invalid and will not see .visi- tors at her home, No. 10 East Seventy- sixth street. Many and varied reasons for the secret wedding have been given by ac- quaintances of both during the few hours since the announcement was made The story most frequently told deals of a will In which It is stipulated that the beneficiary must not remarry Mr. Scarborough {# In business with his ‘brother at No. 27 Beekman street and has lived at No. 234 West Forty-secona street. Little Bobby Crosby has formed an independent Humane Society, but his pity for neglected and overworked horses has led him into the Children’s Court. Bobby is eleven years old and lives at No. 12 Goerck street. When he saw tha tired horse belonging to Hiram Walzer, a fruit peddler, he drove the animal away “just to give !t a rest.” But however kindly the lad’s intentions, his methods brought on a clash with the police. When Bobby faced Justice, Olmsted the tears streamed down his face, but he sald they were for the poor old nag he had tried to comfort rather than for fear of punishment. His mother was there and sald that the boy thought of little else and that his pockets were always full of pictures of horses, Justice Olmsted frowned on Bobby's way of accomplishing his end, but he paroled him for fifigen days just the fame. Perry Belmont will find that the view from the rear windows of his new home at Fifth avenue and Forty-sev- enth street is to consist chiefly of a broad expanse of iron screen. For this he will be indebted to Mrs. J. P. Gofn, owner of No. 1 West Forty-seventh street, who has announced her Intention to build a “fence” eighteen feet high in such @ way as to obstruct Mr. Bel- mont's vision, When Mr. Belmont, who has a fond- ness for scenery, bought his new home he was particularly attracted by the outlook from the rear. “Reminds me," he eald, “of the view from Windsor, looking west. Ah! I have it! I will cut some windows in the eastern wall and from there I can overlook the broad sweep of my nelgh- bor's acres.” Some of these windows were to be in [the kitchen, and so Mrs. Goin arose land volced @ vigorous protest. As a consequence, being a woman of action, she has filed with the Building Depart- ment plans for a fence which is to cost $316. Tt will made of sheet-iron, nicely braced and neatly painted.
