ms 4 J ‘ BS + SAYS BERBER KILLED COOLIE. Coroner Asserts Dis- ease Was Cause of Chinese Fireman's Death. HE SMOKED MUCH. Berl-berl, a disease of the Far East, akin to the dreaded plague, Is supposed to have caused the death of Wang Pal, a coolle coal-passer, in Gouverneur Hos- pital to-day. The hospital doctors are unable to agree upon the nature of the Aisease that carried off the Chinaman, but the Coroners’ Office 1s authority for the statement that it was beri-bert. Many of the symptoms of the disease, {including swollen lMmbs and swollen face, are present. Wang Pal came to New York on the Warrack line tea ship Braemer from Hong Kong, which arrived here on Sept, %, and docked at Pier No. 30 East River. When the ehtp passed Quaran- tine there was no Illness on board. The Chinaman became sick the next day. Caused by Opium Smoking. Capt. Watt, of the steamer, sent to} the Merchant Marine Hospital Service for a physician. The doctor said that Wang Pai was suffering from kidney isoase, brought on by excessive oplum smoking. The condition of the man ‘was not considered serious until yes- terday afternoon, when he took # turn for the worse. Capt. Watt sent for an ambulance at, 21 o'clock last night, and Wang Pai was! Temoved to the hospital. The doctors Were puzzled about what steps to take for bis relief, and while they were fig- luring on his disease he died. ‘When the Coroner sannounced that ‘Wang Pai had died of beri-beri, an am- bulance was sent to the pier, the sup- position being that there were many ther cases of the disease aboard the Capt. Walsh, of the Tenderloin, start- ed for the District-Attorney's office with Detective Buckridge as soon as he had got rid of his morning's routine. He would not say what his object was except that he wanted to see Mr. Jo- rome. It 1s supposed that he wanted the District-Attorney's advice about ‘The Novelty Company,” into whose rooms in the St. James Building the Captain went yesterday. Walsh told Manager Law, of that company, with whom he has had some acquaintance in the past, that ynless he got out of his précinct by this afternoon he would arrest him. The reason for the call was that the Novelty Company ts sald to be the headquarters for disseminating reports from the race tracks among the pool- rooms in the precinct. A lot of tele- raph and telephone instruments were ‘ound in: the place, but there were no evidences of a pool-room proper. Lawyer Ben Steinhart went to the station-house later and, furious with anger, told Walsh that be would get his head ‘broken If he persisted in nosing into other's people's business without a warrant, He defied him to run Law out of the precinct. One of Walsh's men told an Evening World reporter that the Captain knew here was no bdetting In Law's place and that he was just .coning a bluff on him. —__—— ROMAN EARTHQUAKES, * LONDON, Oct. 3.—A special despatch from Rome to-day announces that a violent earthquake was felt last night at Ternt, about fifty miles from there, The inhabitants were panic-stricken and fled to open spaces.
