George Gould is rapidly develop- ing many of the characteristics which made the name of, Jay Gould @ potent one in Wall street. Thus far in his spectacular fight against the Cassatt-Morgan-Pennsylvania combination which seeks to prevent his bringing the Wabash to the At- Jantie seaboard, he has lost no im- portant points. On the contrary, he has just scored a telling one against the coterie. Out of the furious scram- ble for Reading common stock, in which Gould was a central figure, he has emerged with a whole skin and enough stock to give him a say in thé road's management later. Acting under the suggestion of the members of the Voting Trust, stockholders of the Southern Rail- way are rapidly depositing their stock with Morgan & Co. in favor of the proposed extension of the life of the Voting Trust. Such large blocks of the stock have already been de- posited that there is no longer any the time for depositing certificates in favor of the extension does not expire until Sept: 15, virtually a majority of stock is now held by the scheme. Probably this clause in the eireular explains the haste to file stock: “Certificates not stamped will not be entitled to the benefits of the extended agreement.” ‘There are some who claim that this is a threat. It is even insisted that it is illegal. But no one in Wall street seems to doubt that it will not go. * 8 6 Forty-two new national banks, with an aggregate capital stock of $1,430,000, were organized during the month, The woole number of national banks doing business on Aug. 31 was 4,616, and their capttal stock amounted to $707,774,695. eee holds them at a much higher level than they were a month ago. Up to this time, according to figures of Fisk & Robinson, actual withdrawals of circulation by national banks during the month amount to $565,000, while $4,352,950 new circulation has been taken out, Including $415,000 for new banks. Bankers are still scrambling for bonds in order that they may have them ready to deposit for addi- tional circulation as soon as a mone- tary crisis appears. An advance in call money rates to 10 per cent. is an indication, as tankers view it, that a monetary stringency is not as re- mote a contingency as the bulls have been predicting. Fears Morgan's Vengeance. Senator Thomas C. Platt’s prompt disclaimer that he was trying to ef- fect a settlement of the coal strike and his repudiation of the statement that he was bringing influence to bear upon J. P. Morgan are attributed by Wall street to the wholesome fear that the latter might show his dis- pleasure in a financial way. Senator Platt Is head of the United States Express Company and interested, in the Baltimore and Ohio road. In both of these the influence of Mr. Morgan is pronounced. He is power- ful enough in their boards to punish severely from a business standg@int any one who crossed him. It is espe- clally obnoxious to him to have polit- ical methods brought to bear upon his enterprises. It is no idle joke, For the next three weeks Wall street banks will ship to the interior millions of dollars more than they recetve from all interior sources. The movement of the wheat crop to market 1s now fairly under way. Not less than $25,000,000 Is the estimate of currency demands upon New York for crop moving purposes. ‘The Operator” and ‘the Lambs.” A gossipy story that is being told with great glee in certain brokerage offices in Wall street has as its prin- cipal figures a daring, spectacular, nervy operator and a “lamby’ follow- ing of especially bucolic tendencies, The operator is one who deals in big things. The Reading statement for July pre- sents figures showing the cost of the strike of the anthracite miners to the railroad which are the most convincing yet shown, President Baer, head of the Reading system, Is the most implacable foe the miners have arrayed against them, Perhaps this may be partly if not wholly explained by these figures: For July the gross receipts of the Reading Railway Company were $1,921,- 175, which is a decrease of $281,94, For the same period the net receipts were $904,908, a total decrease, net, of $254,199, The Reading Coal and Iron Company for the same month reports a gross in- come of $26,197, which shows a total de. crease of $1,636,908. The deficit was $258,- 761, which {s also an Increase of $284,724. The Reading Company's net income for July was $118,902, which is an in- crease of $36,609. This showing for the month of the properties controlled by President Baen is a very poor one. The net income for all the companies was $363,943, a de- crease of $45%354, while the fixed charges and the deficit largely increased. a KILLED BY ORCHID THORN.
