In a series of six lessons, of which this is the first, Dr. J. J. Dr. Voorhees, Prof. Sundstrom, Cub, and six young women assist. ants give free lessons in swimming in the swimming school at Battery Tlace, under the auspices of the Board of Education. The instruc tion given readers of The Evening World is on the system employed at tie swimming school. BY DR. J. J. VOORHEES. There are six distinct steps to be acquired in learning the art of swim- ming as it 1s taught under the aus~ pices of the Board of Education. We divide the course into land and water drill, and there are tiiree lessons in each. Under this system the pupils must become thoroughly proficient in the swimming movements before they are allowed to try them in the water. ‘There are three divisions in this preliminary course, and it is impor- tant that they should be thoroughly jearned. Some claim that practice of the movements out of the me- dium is of little value, but experi- ence in the public baths here has taught us that the opposite is true. The three movements in the land drill are the arm, leg and combination strokes, the last belng the use of the arms and lege In unison as in swim~ ming. After considerable work with these exercises, and not before, the pupil is allowed to enter the water and begin to use there the movements learned on land, In the water the first lesson is with the stationary belt. stretching across the pool supports the body while the movements of hands and arms and the position of the body are learned, After the pupil has ac- quired more confidence the stationary belt i dispensed with and he or she is | are of same. value BQX FRONT. instructor at the New York Ataletic| ‘The wide girth |°h Introduced to the trolley.
