Alexander Smith & Sons Carpet Com- pany Damaged inTer- minal Warehouse Fire FLAMES UNDER CONTROL} Furs Valued at $1,600,000 and Other Stocks Were Threatened, but Firemen Prevented Spread of Blaze. ¥ | A fire which started in the enormous warehouse of the Terminal Warehouse ‘Company on Twenty-seventh and Twen- ty-elghth streets, Twelfth and Thir- teent.. avenues, this morning did 8160,- 000 damage and fo ran hour threatened to sweep the whole block. Only the construction of the building, which !s divided into separate stores, between which are eighteen-inch brick fire walls, enabled the firemen to con- trol the flames and confine them to one store, No. 4, occupied by the Alexander Smith & Sons Carpet Company of Yonk- ers. Scores of merchants use the rooms of the big warehouse for storage purposes. Among the largest other occupants are John Wanamaker, the Dixon Yall Paper Company, James Steiner & Co., Herzog Brothers and F. Sachs & Co. ‘The $150,000 loss was sustained by the earpet company. Much of It was caused by water. Only the two top stories of the store occupied by them ‘was gutted by fire. Their insurance ts Baito be $700,000. Furs Were in Danger.
