PECTOR AND CAPTAIN FREE BISSERT. ee WEALTHY NEWARK MAN KILLED BY A TROLLEY CAR, Daniel W. Baker. of the Baker Smelting Company, was in- stantly;killed at Broad and Green streets, Newark. by a trolley car this afternoon. Mr. Baker. in trying to avoid one cag, slipped and fell in front of another. Mr. Baker was forty-five years: old and worth at least half a million. Extraordinary proceedings in the Criminal Courts Building this afternoon indicate that District-Attor- ney Jerome is on the trail of one Inspector, two Captains and at least two Sergeants in connection with a conspiracy to free Wardman Bissert, who is now serving a term in Sing Sing Prison. The astonishing discovery was made to-day that a disorderly house has been running at No. 27 Stuy- vesant street, where Lena Schmidt paid money tor protection to Wardman Bissert, and that the reputed pro- prietress of the place is Minnie Kurtz, the missing Bissert witness for whom a warrant was issued several months ago. This house was raided to-day by a squad under the command of Detective Hammond, of the District- Attorney's stafl. Two women were arrested. Soon after the same squad raided a house at No. 212 West Fortieth street and arrested three women, All of the women are said to be familiar with facts upor which District-Attorney Jerome will base the most sensational police conspiracy in years. The women were taken to the Criminal Courts Building and arraigned before Special Sessions Judge Mayer behind locked doors. Minnie Kurtz was also arraigned. She had been extremely obstinate all day, but it is said that when she was confronted with the five new prisoners she weakened and offered to turn State’s evidence. The District-Attorney alleges that papers connected with the charge against Minnie Kurtz have disap. peared from a safe in his ottice and that the police of the East Fifth street Station, where Acting Capt. Churchill is in charge, have sheltered the woman in the station house when they knew there was a warrant out for her. LATE RESULTS AT NEW ORLEANS. Fourth Race—L. niep 1. Sevoy 2. Petit Maitre 3.
