a, FIREMEN BUSY | IN THE NIGHT. Blazes Downtown In ef! tts history the Fire Depart- ment has had no busier morning than this. A four-alarm fire at Fifty-fourth street and Broadway kept them jump- ing until 1.30 o'clock, and from then until 8 they had four fires—two sin- gle, one double and one third alarm— to fight between Canal and Four- teanth streets. No one was Injured at any blaze, Dut a man who got in the way of Chief Croker’s automobile lost a growler of beer, and a gentleman from Pennsylvania who drew a gun and tried to arrest Croker for wilful waste spent the night in the Thir- tleth street police station and will have to do the best he can in Joffer- son Market to-day. The loss at the uptown fire is set at $55,000, and the four downtown fires foot up $32,500. TramMc was held up on the Sixth avenue “L" and Broadway for an hour and on the Third avenue “LL” and Third.
