Makes Important Discovery that the Surrounding Nebulae Have Moved. , CHICAGO, Nov. 20.—Prof. Ritchey, of Yekes’s Observatory, ! rted to have made a discovery in astronomy which will make himself and the observatory world famous. Yhe discovery, in brief, is the proof of the nebular theory, and Prof. Ritchey appears to have reduced to @ matter of certitude what has here- been merely It Im claimed this by obtaining photographic evidence of evolution among the planetary bodles. The Yerkes Observatory !s bart of the University of Chicago, though located at Williams Bay, Lake Genev. street railway m Yerkes, of this city, in London seeking to revolutionize British methods of urban transporation. Proceas of Evolut Prof. Ritchey's observ: claimed. not “Only prov truth of the nebulary theory of creation an- nounced by the famous Frenchman, La Piace, and of the widely entertained be- ef that the solar system. and even etar clusters, have been formed by mill- fons of years of slow evolution from Great bodies of gaseous matter floating fn the inooncelvable abyssea of space, Dut also prove that a nebula, with a Star for a nucleus, changes Its shape @nd quantity of light fe emits, and that these changes are so rapid as to be ob- ervablé within the compass of a few ours. Astronomers have long believed that the nebulae were the matrixes of solar systems and Star clusters Iike our own, Dut no observer had been able to ace the slightest sign of change in the etructure. This has now been done by Prof. Ritchey, who ts bually engaged th preparing for the ‘echnical journals an announcement of his discovery. ‘The celestial object upon which Prot. Ritchey has made his observations 1s the mysterious star, Nova of ‘Perseus, which suddenly appeared last February it ts in the northern sky, blazing with Strange Ught in a where there had been no star bef Its light rap- {dly increased, until 1t became a star of the firat magnitude. Then it gradually faded away, until now It is only of the elxtcenth magnitude. At present It ts e@itogecher invisible to the unalded vision. Surrounded by Nebulae. On the night of Sept. 2 Prof Ritchey photographed = N. of Perseus by means of the twenty-four inch reflector at the observatory, The negative dis- closed the fact that the star was sur- rounded by a nebula, a fact which had been previously shown by another ob- server. Lut on the plato made by Prof. Ritchey, after an exposure of three ours and minutes, there were two fairly dense wisps of nobulosity toward the west with a curve to the north, Merging into the conyolutions of the nebula. This was a startling fact, but Prof. Ritchey patiently waitea for'a savorable The locked for opportunity came last Wed- nesday night, Nov. 13, when for seven hour ey exposed his plate to the Ught of the mysterlous star. When he looked at the negative he observed a fact in which he at once Tecognized the proof so long rought and so ardentiy, wished for by ubservers everywhere, ‘The spots of den nm the west fleld of the nebula nad i“oved. Never beforo had this fact been found, and Prof, Ritchey at once saw the Im: Portance of the discove: H BOY ORUNMED ON “GAN OF OYNANITE £XPLOSION FOLLOWED AND HE . WAS BLOWN TO ATOMS.
