‘ALLEGED TOBACCO SMUGGLER CAUGHT Goods Are Not Stamped, and In- spectors Sny Prisoner Admitted the Offense Charged. Sranco Rochas, a Cuban, who arrived fn this city about three months ago, was arraigned before United States Commissioner Shiekis to-day, and held 4n 1,000 bail for examinaton on a charge of smuggling cigars and cirgarettes into this country. Rochas, who lives at No. 145 East Fif- teenth street, was arrested by Special ‘Customs House Inspectors Charles H. Tratttour and Cohen a few days ago. ‘Trattteur was notified by a clgar dealer fa Pearl street that a lot of fine ciggar- ettes had been offered to him at a very low price. Through this man an arrangement ‘Was mare to mect Rochas. A number of interviews were had and Rochas showed samples of his goods, saying that ho would sell them at a bargain. He refuse dto say at first how they had come Into his possession, but {t ts alleged he finally admitted that they hawt been smuggled. Tho Inspectors agreed to buy the lot provided they were equal to the sam- ples shown. They met Rochas by agree- ment this morning at the corner of ‘Third avenue and Fifteenth -street, and went with him to his rooms at No. 145 Rast Fifteenth street. There they were shown 60,000 Henry Clay cigarettes, 20.- 000 clgarettes of other brands and 1,000 | / Henry Clay perfecto cigars. None of these goods bore revenue or customs stamps. The Inspectors scized the goods and arrested Rochas.
