SALORHEWITTS BODY FOUND FELL FROM MRS. ROBERTS'S YACHT A WEEK AGO. Every Effort Made to Save Mim When He Tumbled from sue Nahma, Barly last Thursday morning while Mrs. Robert Goelet's splendid steam yacht, the Nahma, was proceeding down the bay to witness the Columbia-Sham- Fock race, one of the crew, a young Englishman named Hector Hewitt, fell e@verboard and was drawned. It hap- Bened just below quarantine. This morning, John Williams, iiving on ‘West Thirty-first street, Coney Island, found the body of @ sailor in the water at teh foot, of West -‘Twenty-elghth atreet, Coney Island. The dead man ‘wore a white canvas jacket and trousers with blue woolen sweater with the Nahma" &cross the front. The body has not been identified, but there !s little doubt that tt is Hewitt, for no oher Nahma sailor has been re- Ported missing and the clothing is the same Hewitt wore. Hewitt met his death in a peculiar way. The wind was blowing twenty miles strong and threatened to tear the awning which covered the after of the Nahma from {ts lashings. Capt. Harvey ordered three seamen. of whom Hewitt was one, to secure the awning. ‘They stood on the brass railing and be- gan to furl the canvas. Hewitt lost his hold and fell over- boerd. He could not swim. Tne cry of “aan overboard” was raised and the; engines of the yacht were stopped. A boat was lowered as fast as it could be, but perhaps two minutes inter- vened. It cruised around the spot where Hewitt had sunk like a stone. Hewitt was twenty-four years old and fn described a clever Ind by his ship. mates.
