J., for the purpose of robbery and had entirely excaped detection, dropped into letter- writing, hoasting, of the orime to the victims, and now four are in jail, with long terms probably ahead of them. On Sept. 5 fire destroyed the laundry of Jim Toy at No. 38 Mulberry strect. The restaurant of Emmett Levenson, adjoining; the barber ship of John Tar- rello, at No, 3 Mulberry street, the shoe store of Tony Tarrello, at No. 382, It was supposed at the time that the fire had deen started by an overheated stove in the laundry, On Sept. 12, however, John Tarello recelved a letter which had been mailed ina New York post-office, signed “Chauncey M. Depew, John D. Rocke- feller and Mark Hanna.” The letter aid that the signera had set fire to the places that were burned and that the laundry, shoe store and barber shop hi been robbed, The intention was to destroy the places entirely, amt having failed in that the signers sald that they would ceturn and blow up the buildings with dynamite, ‘The barber was referred to as an “un- fortunate greaser,"” who would be found dead in the ruins.
