~ BALOWIN'S PLANS TO REACH POLE Farewell Speech at the Arctic Club Dinner Last Night. The Arctic Club gave a farewell ¢in- mer a; the Marlborough Hotel last night to Evelyn B. Baldwin, who is to start from Thomsoe, Norway, on June % at the tinad of the Baldwin-Zelgler polar expedition. Among the gucsts were: Prof. Willtam H. Brewer, President of the club; John C. Higgins, United States Consul at Dundee, who superintends the Fefittmg of the America, the ship tha: will carry the explorers North; F. A. . Cook, Jultan Hawthorne, Russell W. Porter, of Boston; J. W. Davidson, United States Conaul at Formom; Hugh J. Lee, F. W. Stokes, members df the Peary expedition of ‘and 'M, and Capt. Amos Bonsall, the last aurviving member of the Kane expedition. A mmall silk American flag was pre- sented to Mr. Baldwin by Prof. Brewer, who expressed the hope that the tn- trepid expiorer would float it at the pole. In response Mr. Baiwin nid: “Iam firmly convinced that this flag Wi? be carried to victory In this expedi- @.n. 1 am unable to say much at this oment of the plans which have been decided upon. The starting point will be Franz Josef Land, and our party will be suMctent in number to avail our- eelves of every resource In the !and in the way of food by hunting bears and ) tther animals. "We shall begin our journey across {Ge ico with $00 doge and fifteen Siberian ponies, and with the assistance of these I believe it will be possible to achieve . the object we shall set out to accom- plish. With the proper management of our large pack of dogs I don't see why we should not succeed in carrying tho Stars and Stripes to the North Pole. “We also hope to do a great deal of aclentie work. Comrades will he en- @eged for this branch of our operations who have had Arctic training. The boy at sixteen was a giant. Then he became ambitious and wanted to leave errand-running and timber-carry- k ing and they let him work In Bellevue Hospital, So he went down with the | convalegcents. He had not been dubbed with the name of John Doe, as most of the male foundlings used to be called on the island, but received . the now more respectable nuime of Frank Brown. Brown was such a giant that they made\him a stretcher currier. Me dis- Mked his humble occupation and used 5 to call himself a jamtor. He also had a horror of ending hts Ite the way he began and went through tt, and he kept what money he ooukl till he saved enough to insure him @ burial on the better side of the Potter's Field fence, Curlousty enough, the Charities Com- misstoner put 4m to work carrying the foundiings from ward 31, the children’s ward of Bellevue, to the Charitles De- partment boat which took them to Ran- dall's Island. He was most tender in handling the little ones. But the big fellow liked to drink and smoke, and sometimes he stayed out too long drinking. His immense frame did not show thin until a few weeks ago, when he looked paler, and day by day he looked paler still. ‘Then he went to not to get up again, and on the an- Cy niversary of hin finding he died.
