AGENT HELD UP. Daring Highwayman Foiled in Attempt on 18th St. Station. A bold thief attempted a hold-up at the downtown station of the Sixth ave- nue “L" road at Elghtenth street just before 4 o'clock this morning. He was driven off after a plucky tight between him and Joseph Lawless, the ticket agent, and the aged ticket chopper known to his assoctates only as “Tom.” The robber bought a ticket from Law- less and then staggered toward the chopper, pretending to be drunk. He re- fused to deposit the ticket and started a quarrel with Tom, who is past sixty years of axe. He finally began shaking ‘Tom, who yelled for assistance and thus brought Lawlesx from his booth. As Lawless approacned the robber turned and knocked him down with « blow that drew blood from his nose and cut his lips. ‘Then the robber dashed toward the tcket booth, the door of which had been left open. Tom Jumped at the Intruder and grap- pled with him. The two men fell to the floor and while they were struggling Lawless retreated to his booth and Closed the door, He yelled loudly for help. ‘The robber broke loose from Tom and ran down the stairway.
