TWENTY-SIX DEAD IN ASYLUM FIRE Children and Nurses Held by Flames in Ro chester Insti- tution—Others Hurt. (Special to The Evening World.) ROCHESTER. N. Y.. Jan, 8.--Not since the lantern works blaze tn 1889 has Rochester known such a loss of life as that at the fire in the Rochester Orphan Asylum on Hubbell Park early reful to-day. After several hours search it iq impossible to more than ap- proximate the number who perished. The most careful revision places the dead at twenty-six, all inmates of the institution. One-half the handsome building on Hubbell Park. between Exchange and Grieg streets, was destroyed, the loss being about $25,000. -- CONWELL, DERTILA POTTER, MILDRED WRIGHT, MINNIE SKINNER, MARY KANE, CORA POTTER. CHARLES BRYANT, ‘. BEACHNELL CAREY, EVANGELINE CAREY, MRS. MARIA GORDON, MRS, MARTHA GILLIS, SIARY ALEXANDER, ELLEN HAMILTON, MAZEL MURRAY, MINNIE TIFFAN MYRTLE PATTI ISABEL MAR’ GERTRUDE 3+ MARY M'CAW, There are thirty persons in the various hospitals of the city. three of whom may dle, Miss Cline, a nurse, discovered the fire_in the west wing of the asylum at 1 A. M., and immetiately gave an alarm, the matron, Miss L. Dinehart, telephoning to Police Headquarters. All the firemen of the department responded to the e alarms sent out. Eaplosion Followed. Shortly after the fire was located in the boller room, a terrific explosion took place near the west end of the connect- ing wing, completely blowing out the lower part, thereby cutting off the es- cape of the children in the east end of the building. All the nuses displayed heroism in re- scuing the children. When the firem reached the asylum flames were leap- Ing from the windows, but from every available part of the structure the women were lowering the children to People who stood on the street holding blankets to catch th Others of the nul were carrying ttle ones down the fire escapes, While still others were marching the inmates on the lower floors to the sidewalks. Hare saving Others. ‘The firemen ran thelr ladders up and during the hour that the fire made full headway worked gallantly, saving many + | lives and carrying nurses and children to safety, Many acts of heroism were performed and several of the firemen were badly injured and at least one will die, Several of the nurses were badly ‘burned tn the work of rescue and one who was being carried to the street after having saved many ohildren was killed. Awful scenes were enacted during the fire, and when the flames were under control many c¢izens who had assisted in the work of rescue were carried away faint from over-exertion and the horror of it all. As soon as the ruins were partially cooled search for the dead beg@. The firet victims taken out were two babies, whose boifes were burned to a crisp. There were 18 inmates in the butiging and fifty employees. It is thought that at least forty lost their lives. About 19 have been accounted for. An investigation {s under way to as-| certain the cause of the fire. WORKHOUSE IN PANIC AT FIRE es A Blaze in Penitentiary Laundry Frightens 1,200 Inmates.
