gf APS HG “NINTH” Goodwin Fears Effect of Merchants’ Letter Boomerang. ABE GRUBER. Serious trouble is expected in the Ninth Assembly District to-day during the primary election. The followers of Councilman Frank J. Goodwin are mak- ing another and more desperate at- tempt to knock John C. Sheehan out of the Tammany leadership. It ts charged that the district is over- run with Tammany repeaters. ‘The polls opened at 2 o'clock this af- ternoon, and the voting started in with & rush. The balloting will end at 10 o'clock to-night. Mr. Bacehan took a flying trip around the district in a cab and returned to the Pequod Club well satisfied with the indications, Hevgaid hix only fear was of repeaters, but he was sure of winning . with anything like a fair chance, Goodwin was much upset and was volubly profane. When asked how the prospect looked to him he replied with an oath, Go and ask that crook across referring to Sheehan, “I reporters." Goodwin's state of mind is due to a difference between himself and his fel- low-worker, Thomas F. Smith, Croker's private secretary, over the authorshtp of the “Merchants letter,’ which prom- ised tunnel jobs to all good Tammany- ites, and which has come back upon them like q boomerang. Pach wants the other to “stand” for it, and each just as hotly objects. Under special orders from Chief Dev- ery, Capt. Cooney, of the West Thirty seventh station, accompanied by two werd men, went through the dis- trict and to each policeman on duty paid: iJ “Give everybody a fair show.” Arreste€ an Ansemblyman. Assemblyman Phillips, a Sheehan man claiming @ residence at 224 West Twen- ty-second street, went to a polling place at $51 Eighth avenue to vote and was met there by Mr. Sheehan and John Lynch, Thomas J, Goodwin, a brother of the Councilman, challenged Assembly- man Phillips's registration, He claimed that Mr. Phillips lived on Fifth avenue. Phillips insisted on putting in his vote und was arrested, In Jefferson Market Police Court Goodwin said that he war unabie to make a complaint as he did not know of his own knowledge that Phillips ld not live in Twenty-second street. The, reason he challenged his vote was be- . eause tt mon rumor that he did not live there, Magistrate Mott dis- charged the Assemblyman. Mr. Phillips was highly indignant, after the proceedings he eald: “ py) vean the laws very closely to asc if there te not some law that covers this case of mine. My arrest was malicious and unwarranted, and | shall bring pro- ceedings against those who caused it if 1t costs me every cent I have.” nd Mr. Sheehan, who places small con- fidence in the police, has Pinkerton men watching all polling places, These detectives, especially picked for work, are all over the district, and it is ot) improbable that there may be 6 clash between them and the police.
