'PHILADELPHIA 3 DUNRAVEN WANTS A RACE Intimated to Commodore Smith That He Might Challenge Again. Commodore Smith was allotted the task of responding to the toast, “The America Cup."" The Commodore sprung a sensation on the yachtsmen present. No one expect- ed that he would let slip a most impor- | tant bit of news, which would astoni: the whole yachting world, He said, slowly and impressively: “I have been often misquoted during the recent discussion of the Dunraven Question, but for this much I will be re- sponsible, “Within the past few days Lord Dun- Faven said to me: +“ ‘Commodore Smith, what will be the chance of having it accepted, if I should hn Present another challenge for the America Cup? “I answered that it was my belief that such a challenge would be considered, but the race could not be sailed until after the race between the American yacht and that of Charles D. Rose. “I also expressed the hope that such a challenge would be syear CHALLENGE COMING TO-DAYJ New York Formn} Letter to th Yacht Club to Be Mailed, RYDE, ISLE OF WIGHT, Sept, 28.— A meeting of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club was held at 2.90 o'clock this afternoon to consider the matter of the challenge for the America Cup by Mr. Charles Day Rose. Mr. Rose was not present at the meeting, There were present twelve members of the Sailing Committee of the Yacht Club, and the meeting was entirely har- montous. The previous action of the Club wa. unanimously indorsed, and Secretary Percy Thalluson was ordered to send a letter 10 Mr. Oddie, Secretary of the New York Yacht Club, to-day, repeat- ing the terms of the challenge and giv ing the name, rig and length of the load water-line of the challenger. Beyond this, the letter contains noth- ing. ‘The members present at the meeting showed no desire to impose any condi- tions whatever on the New York Yacht Club, but were willing to await receipt of the views of the latter Club as when and where the races should be sailed, Secretary T. H. mornin, “Our members generaily are pleased at the prospect of a race, and of seeing our flag as a challenger for the Ameri- ca Cup.” The club-house in which the meeting was held is a handsome structure fac- ing the Solent. The Field this morning says: “Despite the expressed satisfaction of the New York Yacht Club with the chal- lenge for the America Cup by. Charles Day Rose, it cannot be regarded as rep- resenting British yachting. “The name, ‘Distant Shore,’ Indian in it very well mean ‘distant yacht’ or ‘for- Jorn hope.’ “ “The challenge does not put the New York Yacht Club in any better position. Mr. West's photograph of Defender and Valkyrie at the moment of the fouling at the start of the second rece ought to have straightened the Cup Committee, but they burlea their heads, ostrich- lke, in the New York public, and thought themselves secure from the criticism. of the whole world, ‘In the history of yacht racing nothing has equalled the treatment of Valkyrie III. by Defender, except the races be- tween Cambria and Livonia.” orca DUNRAVEN SAILS. FEARS NO PLAYER ON EARTH. husiaatic About His Treatment Abrond—Tachigorin a Won: dertal Player, HN, Pillsbury, winner of the recent manager | international chess tournament at Hast- ings, England, arrived in this country tu-day on the steamship New York. A despatch of welcome and congratu- lation from President Livingston, of the City Chess Club, met the young Amort- can champion before the vessel reached port. Mr. Pulsbury, though modest in speaking of his trlumph, was quite will- ing to discuss the experiences and com- ment on English chess playing. He announced that he had hoped for success all alung, and had received the k treatment. He spoke of his friendly treatment at the hands of Steinitz, Tarrasch, Blackburne and Bird, and felt highly honored by the praise bestowed on him by these masters of the game. Notwithstanding a goodly store of self- contidence, Mr, Pillabury satd he felt somewhat nervous when pitted against Tschigorin for the first game, and still feels bad over his defeat at the hands of the foreigner. Mr. Pillsbury considers Tachigorin by ail odds the strongest player not only on the Hastings team, but tn the whole world of chess masters, He says, how- t, that he fears neither Tsch!gorin nor any other of the crack players he met, Mr. Pillsbury hopes to take part In the great pentangular tournaments at St. Petersburg early this Winter tf he can spare the Ume from business. Ne does no regular training for matches, as he does not consider auch work would help tim to any extent. He therefore contenta himself with studying out mental chess problems and keeping his mind tn training. Returning on the New York, Mr, Pills- | bury played two games blindfolded be- fore a crowd of fellow passengers. His opponent was an amateur.
