6 $5 FOR ABRIOGE JUMP, Mrs. MoArthur Gets Off Cheaply for Her Aerial Leap. She Tells of Her Awful Experience While Going Down. ‘Will Go on the Stage in a Tank Drama. Clara McArthur, who made the leap for fame and fortune from the Brook- lyn Bridge on Saturday morning at 4.20 o'clock, and who has since been recov- ering from her adventure in the Hudson Btreet Hospital, was arraigned in the Tombs Police Court to-day, and was fined $5 by Magistrate Crane, Her husband, who was in court, car- tying a bundle conta&iing the men's clothes worn by Mrs. McArthur when she jumped, paid the fine, and the cou- ple left the court smiling. When Polkeman Edwards brought her to court, it was clearly seen she was wearing @ dress that had been made especially for the occasion. She was leaning on the arm of her husband. She showed she had been through rough experience, for she walked with GiMoulty, There were several bruises on her face. She {s taller than the average woman and is very slender, Her beating was that, of @ country-bred woman. She wore @ rather sweet smile. No one would suspect her to bea woman who would take auch desperate chances for notoriety and money. She carried a bouquet of chrysanthemums and nas- turtiums, around the stem of which was wrapped the small American flag she wore around her waist when she made the jump. Her hat was of black straw trimmed with red roses. Her new and becoming Gress consisted of striped changeable silk waist, with leg of mutton sleeves, the sige of which were made more no- ticeable by the slenderners of her walst. Her skirt was of gray cloth. In contrast to Mra, McArthur's Intelli- gent appearance, her husband has @ low brow, deep-net, shifty black eyes and the bearing of a prixe-fighter. While Edwards was making a com- plaint, charging the woman with viola- ion of a bridge ordinance, Mrs, McAr- hur chatted pleasantly with er since I read how that man poallanan Jumped, T have been ations to do it, as | knew @ lot oon Yfnd fume awaited th first. woman ridge-Jumper, My hus. band was not with me when I atarted, nor did he know I wan going to try it at Phat time. “When T came downtown, 1 a In Brocery wagon and Ww othe middie of the bride. A, McDermott, of the Cabie G21 Broadway’ appeared for the woman. He told Magistrate Crane she had been driven to the act by fear of starvation, and he hoped she would be as lightly dealt with ax had the m mgn who had jumped from the br trate Crane sald it would not do to let her have her freetom. without some penalty, and fined her $5. Mr. Laycock is wealthy and owns a atiful place south of Seuthampton, Nngland, and also has several fine yachts. Some years ago it struck him that It would be a good scheme to’ take homeless or uncared for english boys | and give them a thorough nautical j education on board of his yachts, and | then to procure commissions for them in the British merchant marine. As the busy season is on the strikers believe the strike will be ended before the end of the week. The strike ts confined to workers who make the cheap les of knee-pant ‘Their weekly earnings average from $7 to $9 for sixty hours’ work The strikers held a mass-meeting In Walhalla Hall this forenoon, ‘They will meet again this afternoon.
