It ts believed, however, that with the large patrol force at command there will be no aiMculty in preventing interference with the yachts, and that every excur- sionist, whose boat Is able to keep pace ‘with the racers, will have a fine view of the contest. How to See the Race. Among some of the excursion steam- ers which will carry down big crowds to the races are the steamers Jam town and Yorktown, of the Old Do- minion line, which have a capacity of 600 passengers each; the fast propellei Monmouth, of the Sandy Hook Ine, which will carry 750; the Mount Hope, of the Fall River line; the City of Lowell, of the Norwich line, and Rich- ani Peck, of the New Haven line, the 8am Sloan, and the big steamers Grand Republic and General Slocum. Besides these, the Seventh Regiment Veteran Club has chartered the Iron Steamboat Sirius for its members and friends; a big theatrical party will go €own on the ocean tug Governor, and the Atlantle Yacht Club members will see the rack from the steamer Gay Head, Tugs and smaller yachts will be there without number, while the mos- qguito fleet must be counted In to make up one of the most imposing flotillas that has ever been at « yacht rac Commodore Holly and the Fleet. Apropos of excursion steamers, Com- modore Willis Holly, who has donned a} Naval title and a hting cap, bas promised that his particular command, the steamer Sam Sloan, will not obtrude upon the racers, but will keep to lee- Ward, out of the way. Commodore Hol- Jy 1s also using all his influence to get other commanders in the excursion fleet to act likewise. “It's just as easy,” said the genial ex-secretary of Mayor Grant to an “Evening World” reporter, “to keep out of the way as it is to—well, to keep of- fice-seckers out of the lobby. “Seriously, though, I don’t think any- body wants to give the Englishmen a chance to complain about crowding en the course. As a matter of fact, the yacht will present a far more beautiful picture when seen from ‘loo-ard’ (Com- modore Holly says “loo-ard" now) than they would from any other point cf view, Their movements can be followed Just as well. “The excursion fleet will behave ttcelf admirably, I think, and, except giving the naval sharps a chance to see a Deautiful series of races, there will be Uttle for the patrol fleet to do. Of course, @ great deal depends upon the weather, but the prospects are fa- vorable for a fine day, and in that case the enthusiastic crowds will not be dis- ovement of th¢ two crack with an absorbing interest, for upon the official measurements of the yachts much depend, The vital question was whether or-not-Vatkyrie-woutt have to give Defender a time allowance, and this could only be decided after John Hyslop, the official measurer of the York Yacht Club, had gone over them with his! tape and batten, + Consequently, the centre of attraction early this morning was the Erle Basin, where Valkyrie has been lying for the past three days, and where Dofender was expected to arrive before noon, - — HALF MILLION GUARANTEE PAGE.
