ALKYRIE Ill, FLIRTS ABOUT, reered Around the Lower Bay Trying Her Pace Under Varions Rigs, DOK A SHORT SPIN AT SE gilant Hoisted Sail Late in the Day, After Bending a Now Mainsail. ORD DUNRAVEN EXPECTED. gnals of Welcome Flying from the English Yacht and Her Tender, Which Await Him. Gpecial to The Evening World.) HIGHLANDS OF NAVESINK, N. J., ug. 28—Shortly before 10 o'clock Val- rie set her club topsail and on the leven hour broke the stops from her jib ‘and filled away up the bay towards the Staten Island shore, The wind had been from the north- west all the morning, and while it held right smart during the early hours, it had dwindied away to a mere nothing and Valkyrie barely crept through the element. However, she moved, light as the wind was. Up to the time she left her anchorage, nothing had been heard of the Teutonic, on which Lord Dunraven is a pessen- ger. It is the intention of Valkyrie to Jay along the route of the liner and take her owner aboard as soon as possible. Vigilant Bends Her New Ma 1. In the mean time Vigilant lay at an- chor with her crew busily engaged in bending a new mainsail. This caused the cynical Jerseymen to say that Val- kyrie had caught Vigilant where she wanted her, and was taking a quiet @neak by herself out into the haze, The wind had by this time hauled well to the southward, and the haze etill hung on to the bay as Valkyrie stood out to the eastward and south- ‘ward close hauled on the starboard tack. As Valkyrie passed out towards the Hook she loomed up in the distance Uke a huge phantom. Bhe had set a jibtopsall and had add- ed to her spread. In the light air Valkyrie moved along very rapidly, and it was noticed that she passed the fleet of good-sized sloops and schooners as though they were at anchor, in spite of the fact that her sails did not seem to set very well, on account of the breeze being too light to fll them, ‘The wind gradually fell away until, at 1190 A. M., there was hardly enough of it to give Valkyrie steerage way, and she eventually bcame almost quite be- calmed off the Romer Beacon, and thereupon she went about and headed ‘up the Swash Channel again, evidently not being able to stem the strong flood tide with the light air then blowing from about south-southeast, Valkyrie Went Out to Se At 105 Valkyrie showed herself again to Sandy Hook folks, She beat down to the point of the Hook. ‘hen she reached off a couple of points and made @ half-mile reach, ‘Then she took down her baby jibtopsail, hauled close o the wind, which by this time had auled due south, and headed south- southeast right out into the open sea. ‘At 2.20 the English yacht was about a mile and a half south of the Scotland Lightship. The wind had breezed up into about a three-knot affair and the boat was carrying mainsail, staysall and jib. Vigilant had not moved from her moorings all day. The mainsail she had up early in the day was taken in and about 1 o'clock she put up another one, At 2.30 she showed no sign of moving sway. At this time Valkyrie wore ship and ded for the Hook again. oments later she sent up a big jib top- {l in stops, No tug accompanfed her. e moved along alone and no craft is within a mile of her. At 3 P. M. Vigilant sent up her jib, 4 with mainsail and club topsails d away for a little spin. Defender Also Under Sail, t 310 Valkyrie rounded the Hook made for her anchorage, apparently ng up the idea of sighting the Teu- >. Ten minutes later she dropped yower in the Horseshoe, within 10 s of the Bridgeport, and furled her us for the day. st 4.15 Defender loomed up through haze, She was beating down to tne *seshoe under mainsail, working top- , Staysail and jib, tacking fre- tly. Defender did not proceed to her thorage, but stood off for a spin be- td the Hook. alkyrie's Crew Early at Work, ‘The officers and crew of Valkyr (an early breakfast this morning in icipation of giving the English yacht in during the forenoon. The meal finished before 8.80 o'clock and all 8 at once took to the compressibie 8 and were whisked from the lgeport to the big sloop. fore breakfast the Jib and jib top- had been sent up in stops and the | ring of the maingail removed. The ir was taken aboard the tender and ey's sailmakers altered it so that il fit oetter, Even such a small as a sail cover must fit or Ratsey know the reason, he Evening World’ man reached anchorage at 8 o'clock, just as Ar- if Glennie appeared on the deck of a Bridgeport He had a big towel in y hands and <intshed his ablutions fle he answered the questions put to a. ‘When will you take the yacht out ain?” ‘Just 4s ®00n «* we finish break- at,” answered Glennie, ‘Was yesterday's spin satisfactory ‘Oh, yes, We have no fault to find, Pete eet? FOUN IF Lpiivune Te kuuries. ee A few) In fact, things worked a bit better than we expected." “The wind is rather light this morn- “Yes, but wa shall probably have « Uttle more sail on to-day.” Al jm Criticiome, “The Evening World” man tossed Mr, Glennie a batch of morning papers, and | soon the popular Englishman was the | centre of an interested group as h read aloud the comments on yester- day's work of the challenger, The sails are evident! satisfactory to everybody, Ratsey included, for no changes were made in them. As soon as the crew were aboard Valkyrie the mainsail was hoisted, It was not fully peaked up, but was al- lowed to flap in the wind and waa soon dried out by @ bright sun, Vigilant had her mainsa!l up early, but by 9.80 o'clock it was sent to the deck again. Welcome Ready for Dunrave Fluttering from the masthead of the cup challenger this morning was the signal “D. Q. G.," which being inter- preted meant: “You are very welcome.” This signal was set in honor of Lord Dunraven, who was expected to pass up the bay on board the White Star line steamship Teutonic early this morning. On Valkyrie's tender, the City of Bridgeport, also hoisted "D. Q. G" under Lord Dunraven's private signal, and it was noticed that a long telescope on board of ner was kept constantly trained seaward, evidently in the hope of catching sight of the Teutonic. DEFENDER IN TOW. She Will Proceed at Once to Moor- ings in the Horseshoe, NEW ROCHELL . ¥., Aug. 28.— Defender left her moorings at 11.05 this morning, in tow of the tug Wallace B. Flint. She will be taken direct to the Horse- shoe. The mainsail and balloon-jibtop- sail were set at 10 o'clock, but as the wind was too light Mr. Iselin decided to have her towed down. Mr. Iselin, Nat Herreshoff, Woodbury Rane and H. C. Leeds were aboard th big yacht. Riggers and mechanics worked all last night in readiness for to-morrow's trial race. Herreshoff, Capt. Haff and Mr Iselin expressed themselves well satis- fled with the boat's present condition, ‘The martingale that carried away terday was mended at Piepgras's City Island shipyard, The new steel boom arrived to-day, but will not be used to-morrow. Defender passed under the Brooklyn Bridge at 2.20 this afternoon, being reeted on her way down the ast iver by the usual tooting of whistles and other salutes, Her new mast shone in the bright sunlight and the new rigging seemed complete In every detail. Her topmast had been lowered a trifle to avotd knocking a big chunk of the span out of the structure, It was evident that Mr. Iselin ex- pected to take a spin before reachin the Horseshoe, for her jib wan hoisted in stops, ready to break out at a mo- ment’s notice.
