IMPURE MILK FOR THE POOR, Special Sessions Justices Adopt Heroic Measures to Stop the Trafic, UNHEARD OF SENTENCES. One Wholesaler Fined $100 and Sent to Prison for Thirty Days. CONSTERNATION IN THE TRADE. Many Other Dealers Were Re- manded for Sentence Until Aug. 26. ‘The sale of impure milk has been on the increase among the poorer class of purchasers in this city for some time, ‘and enforcers of the law and protectors of the helpless have decided to put a stop to It. In order to do this with the least nos- sible delay it has been found expedient to imprison as well as fine offenders. The large number of prisoners ar- raigned of late in the Court of Special Gessions charged by Health Board In- spectors with selling adulterated milk has brought the subject prominently before Magistrates Jerome, Jacob and Hayes, and they resolved to adopt he- Folo measures, ‘The accused retail dealers have been fm the habit of pleading guilty in nearly ‘all cases, and the Magistrates learned that fines in such cases were patd by the wholesalers and jobbers from whom the retailers bought milk. Accordingly, when court convened yes terday and the of the fifty similar eases on the day's calendar pleaded guilty the plea was refused. Justice Jerome declared that the case Must go to trial and demanded the Bame of the wholesale dealer who had originally sold the milk, After much hesitation the name was given, It was Nathan Chasatsky, of 810 Broome street, Chasatsky was In court and was called to the bar. He Pleaded that he had bought the milk in Qnother State. “But you sold {t in this State,” in- terrupted Justice Jerome, “knowing {t was for the use of the poor in tene- ments.” After a moment's consultation with his colleagues Jerome went on: “The sentence of the Court Is that you Pay a fine of $100 and be contined in the City Prison for thirty days," ‘The crowd was aghast for a moment St this unheard sf sentence. | Then a great murmur went up.
