Sep TI COLD WATER CONVENTION Twelve Hondred Catholic Total Abstainers Celebrating Their Jubilee COLUMBUS HALL “SHOWED. After a Short Session the De'c- gates Go to Mass in the Ca- thedral in a Body. STORY OF A SNUB IS DENIED. Archbishop Ireland and Bishop Keene Are Warm Friends of the Union—Committes Elected. ‘Twelvs hundred delegates of the Cath- olic Total Abstinence Union of America, who came from all parts of the country to attend the Silver Jubilee Convention of the Union, gathered about Columbia Hall, Sixtieth street and Ninth avenue, this morning. They represented 65,000 members, but as all could not attend, the delegates brought their wives and families, sisters and cousins. Columbus Hall, which besides being able to seat all the delegates is provided with a deep gallery for visitors, was tastefully decorated with the flags of all nations, but over all was the Stars and Strives. Before the proceedings began there was much talk among the delegates and clergymen concerning a report published in a morning paper that the friends of Archbishop Ireland and Bishop Keene were indignant at the manner in which these prelates had been treated. The story was that they had been ignored in the matter of invitations; that while nearly every other Bishop of prominence had ri celved personal invitations, their names Were not on the list, The publication of the story received much adverse criticism, “Iam sorry that such misstatements should get into print,” sald the Rev. J. M. Cleary, President of the Union, to an “Evening World” reporter. “There {8 absolutely not a particle of truth in the story, Neither Arch- bishop Ireland nor Bishop Keene has been ignored, They are, on the con- trary, two of our warmest frienda.”* ‘The convention was opened with pray- er by Rev. Father O'Callaghan, of the Paulist Church, after which the Presl- dent outlined the programme, He said that only the Committee on Credentials wou be appointed, and then the delegates, headed by the band, would proceed in a body to the Cathe- dral, Then on motion of Fey. Father O'Brien, of Ohio, the Committee was appointed as follows, the names being read by Secretary Logu Philip A. Nolan, of Philadelphia; Thomas Gaffney, of Scranton; Thomas McSheehy, of Ohio; Miss Kate Mullin, of St. Louis, and J, Ryan, of Ilinois, Walter Fitzsimmons and Miss Mary Dougherty were appointed Assistant Secretaries of the Convention, ‘The delegates and friends then formed into line and, headed by a band, pro- eeaded to the Cathedral, where seats had been reserved for them. In th archiepiscopal residence, Arch- Hshop Satolli, Archbishop Corrigan, Archbishop Ryan, of Philadelphia, and half a hundred priests were waiting. The solemn high mass began Immedi- @tely after the arrival of the delegates. Archbishop Satolli was the celebrant nd the sermon was preached by Arch- hop Ryan. mong other things Archbishop Ryan eata: “To effect great popular moral re- forms the religious element in man, the conscience power within him, must. by appealed to You cannot legislate him into morality, “You may’ seck to strike at the sa- Joon and urge men to pass it, ax the Greeks passed the temples, of thelr {- ries, ‘without looking, without breath- ing, without speaking.” You may enact the most stringent laws against Sunday drinking and create a powerful pu opinion which will brand as disgrac the slightest abuse of alcoholic @ influe S against the tide and thus do some good, But 1 flo} nks even greater excess will suc 1 order promptly a The Com n Creden i The Pre ed an ad which was yo the s retary show f the ganization during rt A com: Mittee on resolu mittees Was ai) At to form at Hal held President ard, and F Excise Board. will other com. roceed to Car ef the Polic ver addresses Archinshops Satolli, Corrigan, Ryan, att und and Fathers Clears and. i Thomes 1.
