# y SALOON MAN | ON GRAND JURY, Present Body May Pass On Any of Seven Thousand Excise Cases, + HUGHES CALLED OFF BEFORE. This Time He Is Down on the Grand Jury Panel as a Real Estate Dealer. “HE HAS A WAY OF GETTING ON.” So Says His Bartender, but Adds that the Boss Didn't Want to Serve This Time. Recorder Goff to-day sent for Henry Hughes, a member of the Grand Jury, to come to his chambers. Hughes keeps @ saloon at 177 Spring street. It was learned afterwards that Re- corder Goff had been informed that Mr. Hughes, on a former occasion, had been excused from service by Justice Barrett in the Court of Oyer ani Terminer. Hughes then kept a saloon on Spring and Varick streets. The Extraordinary Grand Jury convened then was expected to pay especial attention to many excise cases and some election cases. ‘The City Reform Club's attorney told Justice Barrett that the saloon owned by Hughes was known to have a bad record, and that the bartenders and the frequenters of the place had been heard to boast that “everything was @mooth now that ‘the boss’ had got on the Grand Jury John D. Lindsay, the acting District- Attorney, said to-day that it had been decided that the present Grand Jury, of which Hughes is a member, is to take action in the score of Excise cases which haye recently been transferre from the Court of Special Sessions to the Grand Jury at the request of the defendants. He also said that there were at present no less than 7,000 ex- ise complaints, any one of which might wo before this Grand Jury. When a reporter for “The Evening World” went to the office of the Com- missioner of Jurors he was received by a clerk, and asked to be shown the minutes of the Commission for 1888, He said: “Major Plimley has just gone out, but I know what you want. It's about Henry Hughes, He was here only a few days ago, and is a respectable real estate dealer. We got his address wrong on the panel, but here ts his nam you see, with the real address, as given in the new City Directory, where his oc- cupation is also set down as “real es- tate. f he was put down as a restaurant- Yeeper on the panel that was a mi take, for the man has been out of the Uquor business for over ten years. “Probably, however, the clerks took ‘rest, which stands for real estate, for restaurant.” At 177 Spring street, which 1s the ad- ress of the alleged real-estate doaler as given on the official Grand Jury panel, an Evening World reporter found ‘8 saloon, on the awning of which was the name of Henry Hughes. It is next dcor to a saloon run by ex-Assembly- man Mike Callahan. Upon entering Hughes's saloon the reporter learned from @ fat bartender, who was talking to several ‘longshoremen and team- sters, that Hughes, the boss, was now on the Grand Jury and was expected in @hortly. “How does he happen to be on the Grand Jury? asked the reporter, “Well, the boss has a way of getting en Grand Juries said the bartender, although this time he wanted to he excused.” “So they had him fown &@ restau- rant-keeper, did tfer? That's dead wrong. He calls himself a real-estate dealer now,” and then the cheerful bar- tender laughed heartily. Up to 8 o'clock Hughes had not re- @ponded to the Recorder's request, —_—_— AN ILL-FATED SALUTE. Cannon Fired from « Train Injures ‘Pwenty Soldiers in Another. SPRINGFIELD, O., Aug. 6.—A can- mon fired from a Knights of Pythias ex- cursion train yesterday struck a pass- ing train carrying the Third Regiment Ohio National Guard, Col, Charles 8. Anthony commanding, resulting in the serious injury of a number of the @oldiers. ‘The regiment had been in camp for the past week at Johnson's Island, near @andusky, and were returning to their homes on a special train, Yesterday was also the day for the Knights of Pythias of Springfield and Dayton to stait, camp at Sandusky. ‘The Pythians had a small cannon in the baggage car of their train and were firing salutes as they went along. One of these salutes was fired just as the regimental train was passing at Belle- fontaine and the full charge of the cannon was delivered right in the faces of the soldiers, who were sitting beside the open windows, ‘0 make matters worse, the car was allea with the blinding and suffocating smoke of powder. Tammany Hall Will Be Controlled by a Committee of 100, Tt begins to look as if ex-Mayor Hugh J. Grant did keep something ‘up his sleeve when he told the reporters on his return from Europe on Saturday that he did not bring a plan to re- organize Tammany which he and Mr. Croker had cooked up tn London. ‘The ex-Mayor permitted a Itttle of his {§side knowledge to protrude below his cuff, to the Democratic Steering Com: mittee yesterday, There ts to be an- other conference to-morrow, followed by a meeting of the Executive Com- mittee on Thursday night and of the General Committee on Friday, at both of which the Grant plan will prob- ably be discussed. Mr. Grant is insisting that the Wig- wam be reorganised on much more comprehensive lines than those proposed by the Delmour Steering Committee, He still clings to his Committee of One Hundred idea and may push it through. There ‘Is some opposition to it from the rank and file, but as Mr. Grant is about the only man who has displayed any of the qualifications of a leader since Mr. Croker dropped out, he will probably have his way. A lot of keel- hauling and pulling about will be racea- sary to launch his scheme properly, but {t 1s generally believed that it will be floated all right. The withdrawal of Mr. Croker from all of the committees of Tammany Hail after serving in various capacities for thirty years leaves Grant about the only man to take hold of matters, and it 1s not improbable that he will call to his ald County Clerk Purroy, With the Committee of 100 of 50, as the num- ber may be decided upon, Grant and Purroy pill probably be able to start the machine going again in good shape, Mr, Croker is believed to be out for good, although he will continue to give Mr, Grant, who was his protege, the benefit of his advice and experience. There 1s no one fdentified with the affairs of the Wigwam capable of taking Croker's place as leader, but Grant hopes to obtain the same satis- factory results as under Groker's man- agement by carrying out his grand counsel of 100 idea Grant is appealed to now more than any other Tammany man in town and great things are expected from the meeting of Thursday which will con- sider his scheme. a GEN. President Rooseyelt's attention was called to-day to Mertain irregularities in the examination papers of a large number of the young men who recently pasaed the clvil-service examination and were cited as eligible for appointment fn the police force. Secretary Bell sald this afternoon that in making up the eligible lst he iscovered what appeared to him to be evidences of fraud—in fact, he felt quite certain that a goodly proportion of the 148 applicants who passed the examina. tions had obtained their rating through fraud. About three weeks ago 44 applicants were examined, but only 148 obtained the required percentage. To-day, when Secretary Bell commenced to enter the names in the register he found, accord- ing to his own statement, that 47 of the 148 sets of papere were at least suspl- cious if not actually fraudulent. As a result a considerable delay will be necessitated before the 200 or 4 vacancies on the force can be filled from the present list.
