ae __—as TWENTY YEARS FOR COLLINS, He Is the Negro Who Shot, and Killed Frederick Ohl, the Princeton Student, SENTENCE MAKES HIM LAUGH. Judge Gummere Says the Evi- dence Called for a Verdict in the First Degree ALSO TEN YEARS FOR ASSAULT. But Good Behavior Reduces the Whole Term to About Fifteen Ye TRENTON, N. J., July %4.—John Col- lins, the negro, who shot and killed Frederik Onl, the Princeton student, was this morning sentenced to twenty Years at hard labor in State prison. Collins was called to the bar as soon @s court opened. He appeared to be in @ happy frame of mind. Collins was first called upon to plead to an indictment charging him with @trocious asault and battery with intent to kill Garrett Cochran, the second stu- dent whom he shot. By instruction of his counsel he entered a plea of non ‘vult contendre. The formality in this case being con- eluded, sentence on the conviction for murder in the second degree was pro- nounced. ‘The limit allowed by law for this crime is twenty years, and Judge Gummere imposed the limit. He then sentenced Collins for the assault on Cochran. Ten years was the term, but the sentences &re to run concurrently. Collins was laughing when led from the court-room. In sentencing Collins, mere said that had the fu Collins found him guilt degree it would have been satisfacto not alone to him as presiding jud, Dut to the entire court. A verdict of murder in the first degree Would have been justified by the evi- dence adduced, he suld Colling will have to serve about fifteen years {f he behaves himself while in Prison, He will receive about five years’ Commutation for good conduct It is not therght likely counsel for Collins will appeal, as they recognize that he had a nartow escape from the allows, and they do not appear willing 0 risk his life again. —e “FISH JOHN” FOUND GUILTY. Why Some Manhattan Clubmen‘s Bar Bills Were So Large. Charles White, of 272 West Twenty- fifth street, a waiter in the Manhattan Club, was arraigned to-day In Jefferson Market Court, charged with forging and presenting at the Club bar a worthless voucher for 60 cents’ worth of cigars. For a long time members of the Club have complained that their monthly r bills were unduly large. A private tective was employed, and {t was learned that some walters were in the of counterfeiting signatures of members, by tracing cancelled orders. In this manner many bills have been nearly doubled, Not only were orders forged, it Is alleged, but old ones used over again.
