i ; 54 INJURED WW AROT, A Gang of Tonghs Attack a Picnic of Roman Catho. lic Germans, THAEE DEAD; A SCORE DYING, Leader of the Gang Stabbed a Man and Was Brained by the Victim's Wife WORSTED, THE TOUGH MADE OFF], For an Hour the Battle Waged Fleroely and Now Physicians Are Working Over the Injured. CHICAGO, July 6.—Startling reports of @ desperate riot at Siberia, Perry County, Ind., are coming in by telephone and couriers from the scene of the en- counter. Dr. William Lomax, of White Sulphur, has gelephoned that a thousand men and women took part in the fight; that three men are dead, four fatally hurt and over fifty seriously injured. The dead are: Fred Elmer, William Geys and Frank Hart. Those fatally hurt are: Peter Bennett, Robert Dodge, Abner Stroud and Sam- uel Wilson. Siberia is but a hamlet of a few dozen straggling houses and a Roman Catholic church, the congregation of which is composed of Germans. They are sim- ple and inoffensive people, but have been greatly annoyed by persons op- posed to their religion. Thursday they planned to enjoy a Breat plenic in the woods surrounding the village. The entire population turned out to enjoy the pienic, and all went smoothly until several gangs of disturbers appeared on the scene and began to make trouble. ‘There were a number of booths on the ground wherein intoxicants were served. ‘These were Mberally patronized by the intruders, who soon began to insult the Germans and their wives. The insults soon precipitated a fight, which in a few moments assumed the proportions of a riot in which everybody took part. Clubs, vases and bottles were brought Into play, and the peaceful pic- nic was immediately transformed into @ Sreat group of struggling, cursing men and screaming women. Samuel Wilson, a leader of the out- siders, was armed with a huge knif. which he wielded on every side, stat bing and cutting many persons, He was finally opposed by a sturdy German who was more than a match for him until Wilson plunged the knife into his neck. As the man fell back his wife sprang through the crowd and dealt Wilson a terrible blow with a beer bottle, crushing his skull. During the melee one of the intruders Kicked a woman about to become a mother, Killing her child and fatally injuring her. It soon became apparent to the attack- ing party that they would be annihilated if the fight was continued, and after their leader was stricken down they ran hastily through the woods to wnere their horses were tethered, and escaped, leaving three of their number on the ground for dead. Cots and litters were hastily tmpro- vised, and the dead and wounded re- moved to the church In the village, and all the physicians in the neighborhood called upon. Dr. Lomax, a surgeon of White Sulphur Well, and his two assist- ants, were kept busy all night caring for the wounded, Dr. Lomax states that he saw fifty- four Injured and believes that several of ‘them will die. He says the fight began @t 3 o'clock in the afternoon and con- tinued for an hour. A telephone message from White Sulphur Well says at least twenty of the injured will die. A courler from the @cene of the battle, who was nent for supplies for the surgeons, states that three persons are dead. Two of them ‘were members of the plenic party, and the other is Wilson, the leader of the *iNearly all, of the, ri Nearly all of the rioters are ; although it is certain that in Rey there were @ number of rough charac- ers from @ district lying Ohio River, bic ie ad ig any of the rioters carried bu; spokes, concealed In. thelr sleeven and em Ww! errific ef ot, neither age nor sex. es partog: ‘The local magistrate has sworn in nearly every man in the community as a deputy to prererve the peace, as it Is feared the rioters will secure reinforce- ments and return for the bodies of their comrades, one of whom in dead and the ethers probably fatally injured, A WOMAN CAUSED ALL THIS. Fifteen Men Cut, Shoot Each Others’ Ears Of BERNARDOTE, Il, July 6—A num- ber of men were drinking in a beer garden here, when a fight was started about a woman. Knives, revolvers and stones were brought into use. A des- perate battle took place, in which fit- teen men took part, and the result is that three of them were fatally wounded. Wilbur Lease had his throat cut, and it is thought he will die. Lester Myers had both ears bitten off and was other- wise badly used up. He will hardly re- cover. Myron Kimball, who was watching the battle, was hit by a stray bullet and badly wounded. John Coakley, one of the participants in the battle,’ was shot, and half a dozen more of ‘those who took part in the trouble, were car- ried off the ground suffering from ‘wounds. a — Holiday Firework Show To-Night ‘The hollday programme of fireworks prepared by Pain for the Fourth of July at Manhattan Beach, and which the rain storm of Thursday pre- China. Forest Fire Got the Treviias Into Troubi IRON RIVER, Wis, July 6—Mr, and Mrs. Trevlin were formerly residents of this city. Shortly before the big forest fires last Fall Mra. Treviin started with her baby to visit friends at Hinckley. When Hinckley was wiped out noth- ing was heard from her, and Mr. Trev- lin took his two remaining children and went there to search for her. The bodies of the people Mrs. Treviin had gone to visit were found, and near them the bodies of a woman and child, which Mr. Treviin identified his loved ones. Mr. Treviin removed to Fort Francis, Manitoba, After a period of mourn- ing, he found it necessary that some one should look after the two remain- ing children, and after a short court- ship married Miss Annie Varley, A few days ago Mrs, Trevlin appeared in Iron River looking well, but worried. Instead of going to Hinckley she had changed her mind and went to St. Paul fur a visit, which extended over some months. Learning her husband had row moved to Fort Francis she went there and found the new wife In her ace. : Pithere was a scene, but Miss Varley concluded to abdicate, and Mra. Trevlin has resumed her place in the affections of her husband. —— MARIE WAS FICKLE. Daly’s Production of “Two Gentil men of Veroma”’ Criticieed, (Copyrighted, 1898, by the Assoctated Prose) LONDON, July 6.—Paderewski's only concert here this season was given last week, and, while St. James's Hall was full, there was a great deal of paper flying about, and his star seems some- what on the wane. Rosenthal, who is also here, seems to have eclipsed him. It is reported that as a result of sev- eral conferences, Paderewski and Sauer have signed an offensive and defensive alliance in connection with future Amer- {ean tours, and have parcelled out the country. Sauer was under contract to go to America this year, but {t is now stated that he will not go, so as not to interfere with Paderewski. The latter in his turn is reported to have ¢greed not to visit America the following year. In connection with Paderewski, it is tated by one who knows him intimately, that the length of hair is always gradu- ated according to the countries he visits. In. sober, classical Germany his hair is quite short; in France a little longer; England ts treated to a still further dis- play, while in America the longest period 1s reached. It is certainly a fact that his hair in England is much shorter than it has ever appeared in America. Under the management of Henry Ab- bey, Sarah Bernhardt has made a new departure in touring the British prov- inces. Since the close of her London engagement she has been doing the out- side towns in @ special palace car train of the Midland Railway. Her season ends to-night at Manchester, and the innovation in the way of travelling by special train has excited much com- ment in the British press. Mr. Lowenfeld has sold the American rights of “Gentleman Joe’ to M. #. Curtis, of “Bam'l of Posen" fame. Some of the papers have been having a laugh over the terms which Fay Tem- pleton has just signed. It seems that the fair Fay is under contract to pre- sent herself at rehearsals “at a weight reduced to not more than 180 pound: The production of “Two Gentlemen of Verona” has excited much diverse criticism, There has been praise for the manner in which it is mounted and objection to the manner in which Mr. Daly interpolated music in Shakes: peare's text. Ada Rehan and James Lewis have been highly commended by the critics. M. B. Curds gave a trial matinee of “Sam'l of Posen” on Thursday last at the Galety Theatre. The result is that the newspapers have united in a chorus of condemnation, and express wonder at the fact that ‘“‘Sam'l of Posen” was successful in the United States. = MRS. WINTERS MURDERED? Before Dying She Accused Charles Russell, Who Is Locked Up. Mrs, Sarah Winters, colored widow, forty-five years old, died at her home, 217 Bullivan street, last night, under circumstances which has caused an in- vestigation to be made by the police and the Coroner. Charles Russell, forty-nine years old, also colored, living at 43 Minetta Lane, was locked up in the Mercer Street Po- e Station on suspicion of having been ‘onnected with the causes which led to the death of the woman, Mrs. Winters was employed as a ser- ant by Mrs. Cornelius Clendenen, the second floor of 217 Sullivan Last Monday she Went to house. ‘There the couple had a quarrel, and he Js said to have beaten and kicked her, and to have cut her on the chin, After this assault she went to Bigelo drug store at 100 Sixth avenue, where her wound sas dressed. Tuesday ahe felt badly, and told Mrs, Glendenen her experience with Fussell Mrs, Clendenen told her to have Russeli arrested. Wednesday and Thursday she seemed to be in good spirits, but about 10 o'clock last night she died suddenly in her room, Mrs, Clundenen called in Patrolman O'Rourke, of the Mercer street station, and told him the circumstances of the case, and of the dead woman's rela- tions with Russell, He arrested Russell, who denied hav- ing beaten the woman, and even said he did not know her, WORLD: SATURDAY EVENING, JULY 6, 1895.
