a DANIA TOWED {NTO PORT, The Hamburg - American Steamship Broke Her Pro. peller Shaft. WERKENDAM BROUGHT HER IN Aocident Occurred as Capt, Lud- wig Spoke the Pilot-Boat Herman Oelrichs, WAS 350 MILES FROM NEW YORK. Pilot Scoured the Sea for Mil Sighting the Duichman, Which Responded to Signals, The Hamburg-American line steamer Dania, Capt. Ludwig, reached Quaran- tine shortly before 9 o'cluck this morn- ing with a broken shaft in tow of the Netherland-American line steamer Wer- kendam, which left Amsterdam June 16, The Dania sailed from Hamburg also on June 16 with 39 cabin, 372 steerage Passengers anc a full cargo of general Merchandise consigned to the Hamburg- American Packet Company. The Dania encountered moderate variable winds, chiefly from east and south, up to the Banks, when it hauled to the northward and blew @ fresh gale for twenty-four hours, with a heavy sea running which caused the ship to roll and pitch heavily. Chief Engineer Wehrhagen was on duty in the engine-room during the bad weather and noticed that something @pparently was wrong with the shaft, but as the engine worked well no par- ticular attention was paid to the mat- ter. A close watch was kept on the machinery, however, by the engineers, The steamer proc: P. M., in latitude 41.11, longitude 66.05, when the pilot-boat Herman Oelrichs was sighted, The Dania’s engines were stopped to enable Pilot Leiths to be taken on board. The snip's engines, on being started ahead, refused to work. The engineer on watch communicated instantly with Capt. Ludwig, who was on the bridge at the time, and Chief Engineer Wehrhagen, on making an in- vestigation, discovered that the tail-end section of the shaft was broken in the Propeller. Meanwhile Capt. Ludwig signalled the Pilot-boat by meuns of the steam whis- tle, Pilot Nicholas Roach, who was the last pilot on the Oelrichs, jumped into his yawl and rowed alongside the dis- abled steamer. Capt. Ludwig informed him of the steamer’s crippled condition and requested him to send the first steamer sighted to the assistance of the Dania. Meanwhile the Danta laid to, and the weather being calm and somewhat hazy night signals of distress were kept burning all night in the hopes of at- tracting some passing steame The Pilot-boat's crew, after leaving the Cisabled Dania, kept a sifirp lookout for a steamer from the eastward, and within a few hours were rewarded for their vigilance by the lookout aloft, wno gleefuily reported a steamship's masthead light to the eastward. The pilot-boat signalled the steamship with several flaring torches, which were an- swered, by the steamship, which proved to be the Werkendam. Pilot Roach quickly communicated the Dania's mishap to Capt, Bakker, who immediately ordered a close watch kept for the disabled steamer, Hix vigilance was rewarded about 4.30 Thursday morning, when the lookout in the crow’s-nest sighted the steamship's signals of distress, The course of the Werkendam was altered, and she bore down close to the Danta, Capt. Ludwig requested to be towed to this port and Capt. Bakker consented to render all possible awsistance, A hawser was sent on beard the Dania and at 7 A. M., the towline being made-fast, she proceeded with the Dania in tow under easy steam for the remaining 350 miles of the voyage, without further accident. Quarantine was reached shortly before P o'clock this morning. Here the hawser was let go and the Dania came to an anchor, The tugs L. Pulver, E, M. Mil- lard and Wendell Goodwin then took the disabled steamer in tow and towed her to her pier at Hoboken, Thi was little excitement among the Dania’s passengers at any time. All united in testifying to the able seamanship displayec by the com- mander and his assistants, as well as to the courtesy shown by Capt. Bakker, of the Netherlands steamship. ‘The er has i eeesnt Experts say that the W dam will recetve over $100.00) salvage. ‘The accident which disabled the vessel was to the after section of the shaft, which was broken in the propeller, A new shaft will be cabled for unless the air the damage suff- engineers can. re Clently. to enable her to reach the other vithout risk.
