They Plead that They Have Not Found a Fender that Will Fill the Bill, Mayor Schieren, of Brooklyn, to-\ay fwarned the presidents of the vari trolley ratiroad companies that they ust comply with the ordinance requir- ng them to attach suitable fenders to heir cars, or steps will be taken by the ity government to compel them to do ®@0 and punish them for their neglect. The matter was discussed at a con- ference in Mayor Schieren’s office to- @ay. Tho fender ordinance was passed by the Common Council two months ago. It goes into effect next Tuesday. “The ordinance requires that each car must be equipped with a safety device, | ‘which shall extend to within three inches ‘of the tracks and so arranged that noth- 4ng can pass underneath the platform to the wheels. For every violation of the ordinance fe companies are lable to a fine of Among those who attended the confer- ence were Assistant Corporation Coun- sel Yonge, who had been detailed to fee that the truley ordinances are en- forced; President Daniel F. Lewis, of the Brooklyn Heights Rallroad Com- pany; President Wicker, of the Brook- lyn, Queena County and Suburban Rail- road Company; President Henry W. Slocum, of the Coney Island and Brook- lyn Railroad Company; Secretary Frick, of the Atlantic Avenue Railroad Com- pany, and President Plympton, of the Gubway Commission, President Lewis told the Mayor that his company had tested various fenders, but that they had been unable to find one that seemed to meet the require- ments of the ordinance, 7. President Siocum said that the officers ‘of hia company were willing and anxious to adopt a suitable fender, but that they wanted the representatives of the city to select the fender and agree that the style should not be changed. The com- pany objected to adopting any device until the style was finally settled, and it would not be put to needless ex- pense, The Mayor feminded the railroad magnates that they had plenty of op- portunity to secure a good fender. “The ordinance will go into effect “Nery soon,” said the Mayor, “and must tell you now, gentlemen, that it must be ‘obeyed. "The city does not Wish to do anything unreasonable in this matter, but I Intend to see that the law is carried out. Unless the or- @inance {s complied with, prosecutions will follow.” At the conclusion of the meeting it was understeod that the railroad com- epanies would petition the Aldermen for ‘an extension of time, in which they might adopt some particular fender, TROLLEY VICTIM NUMBER 111, The Life of Five-Year-Old Joseph Santetto Crushed Out. Five-year-old Joseph Sautelo is the one hundred and eleventh victim of Brooklyn's trolley system. The little fellow died last night in St. Catherine's Hospital, that city, from injuries re- ceived by being run down by a Union avenue car in Williamsburg, Little Joseph was playing in front of his home in North Eighth street and Union avenue about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He climbed on the step in the rear of an ice cart. Later the boy jumped off and started to run quickly across the street. A Unton avonue trolley car in charge * ef Motorman Robert Walker and Con- ductor ‘Theodore Hall came along from Greenpoint at a high rate of speed, eye witnesses declare, and in an instant the Uttle fellow was under the wheels of the car. His pitiful screams could be “heard a block away. ‘The boy did not touch the fender, al- though that pretense at life saving was in the proper position for doing its al- leged duty. The little fellow's body Passed directly under the fender and his hip and shoulder were crushed by the front wheel. Maria Bautelo, the boy's mother, saw her only child from a window, and ran screaming from the house. ‘The little fellow was removed to St, Catherine's ‘Hospital in an ambulance in an uncon- sclous condition. He died under the in- fluence of narcotics. ~ _ The motorman and conductor were ar- rested and locked up. The motorman said the reasom the company deserted them in thelr trouble was because a green motorman skipped bail and ran ‘away to Canada, : ‘Justice Goetting held the‘men without Dail to-day for examination, WAYLAID AND BEATEN. It Cont Him @3 to Release His Own Dog from the Poand, There ts a difference between Jacob Parbeil, the official dog catcher of Long Island City, and his three assistants, John Skelly and James McNeill, of this city, and William Norton, of Brooklyn, His assistants’ duties are to go around in a wagon through the streets catch- ing dogs. Parbell had them arrested and arraigned before Judge Duffy in the Police Court to-day on the charge of larceny, He accused them of selling dogs they caught instead of taking them to the pound, where it takes §3 to re- lease a dog. When the case was called to-day the official dog catcher had a number of witnesses present who testified to hav- ing purchased dogs at a cut rate, but they were unable to identify the pris- oners, and they were discharged. Shortly after leaving the court-room, the official Cin Eo ease rushed back, and golng before Judge Duffy, exclaimed: “Your Honor, someone has taken my. dog. He was a full-blood, and now he has been abducted.” ‘This caused a smile. The official dogeatcher went to Pound- master Sullivan for the dog. The Pound- master told him that he waa paid for catching dogs and that he ought to know better than to try and get a dog out of the pound; if he wanted his dog he would have to pay $3. Rather than lose his “full bloo: bell ae the $% and his dog leased, Some belleve that a joke was played on the dogeatcher and that the dog was taken to the pound purposely while he was trying to have his assistants punished. ——— A New Steamboat Line, RIVERHEAD, L. 1, June 21.—The Long Island and New England Steamboat Company has flr articles of Incorporation tn tht Ne County Clerk's office, Tho capital stock is state* to be $50,000. ‘The directors are J.
