Justice William J, Gaynor, of the Su- preme Court, granted a temporary stay this afternoon in the case of ex-Police Inspector McLaughlin, who was sen- tenced to-day to two and a half years in State's Prison for extortion. ‘The application was made to the Jus- tice while he was holding court at New- burg, N. ¥., by Edward E. McCall, one of McLaughlin's counsel. An soon as, Justice Barrett had pro- nounéed sentence against McLaughlin and judgment was entered, Mr. McCall took a train for Newburg and appeared before Justice Gaynor. He asked for an onler requiring the District Attorney to show cause, on Saturday next, why McLaughlin should, not be granted a certificate of reason- able doubt, as to whether the judgment rendered against him should stand. Such certificate, if granted, operates as a stay pending his appeal. | Justice Gaynor granted the order and! also an intermediate stay until the ap- pilcation shall be heard and decided by | him in Brooklyn at 10 o'clock Saturday morning.
