SHERMAN ON “SOUND MONEY”): Oblo’s Senator Opens the State Convention with a Financial Speech. HE, TOO, SCORES SILVERITES, |S Their Proposition Is a Degradation of Our Dollar to Fifty Cente. POLICY OF 1853 IS THE BEST. Wt Ie the Only Way te Preserve the Parity of Gold and Sliver at a Fixed Ratio. ZANESVILLE, 0., May %.—The Re- publican State Convention opened this afternoon for the nomination of a full ticket and other business affecting the @election of the successor to Senator Brice and the choice of the party in this Btate for the Republican nomina- tion for President. The conferences of delegates yeate day and last night showed that the Senatorial and Presidential issues over- shadowed the contests for places on the state ticket. On the arrival of additional delegations from Central and Southern Ohio this afternoon, especially from Cincinnati, it waa evident that a factional contest would fight # out on Bushnell or Nash for Governor. All other candidates ,including Hoyt, are playing for second choice support, and conceding that they have no chance until it is demonstrated that neither Bushnell mor Nash can be nominated. The Convention was called to order by Col. Joseph C. Bonner, Chairman of the Btate Committee. Col. Bonner then tn- troduced Senator Sherman the Tem: porary Chairman, who spoke as follow: “Gentlemen of the Convention: Yeu have met to designate the next Gov- ernor of the State of Ohio, You havi still higher duty, to announce the principles and policy of the Republican party. What you will say here will have an important Influence beyond the limits of your for the intelligent action of the Republicans of Ohio will, as in the past, indicate the opinions of Regublicans in all parts of the United “Biates. “We are in favor of a protective tar- iff. We had such a tariff, While it ‘was in force we had prosperity, good times and money plenty. We believe that the policy of protection should be extended to all productions impartially, to labor on the farm as well as in the workshop. “We are opposed to the Democratic poy-y of protecting woollen manufac- tugs and admitting wool free of duty. We denounce a scheme of taxation which annually increases the public debt more than $0,000,000, The Tariff law of the last Congress is partly @ copy and generally a failure. “We demand a reform in the tariff, not tc promote sectional interests, but to secure ample revenue and impartial Protection to domestic industries.
