BIG TROLLEY JUDGMENTS, $290,712.72 Worth Unsatis. fied on File in the Brooklyn: Courts,’ REGORD SINGE JAN. 1, 189% Heights System Has $2065,- 107.48 and Atlantic Ave- nue Line $75,178.10. FEW AGAINST SMALLER ROADS. jany of the Bigger Ca: Have Geen:Carrled to the Court of Appeals by Magnates. Two hundred and ninety thousand, seven hundred and twelve dollars and seventy-two cents’ worth of unsalisfied \ Judgments are recorded on the dockets of the Supreme Court, Kings County, and the Brooklyn City Court, against the Brooklyn trolley compantes. ‘These corporations not only Kill chil- Gren in the streets, but they persistently refuse to pay judgments in the lower courts, They respect no decision, The People and the authorities should show them no mercy. These figures only cover the period from January 1, 1893, to date, as the damage sults against the trolley com- panies were only begun in 1893. The first trolley line opened in the “ty was the Second Avenue line of the voklyn City Railroad Company. This fe began work under the trolley May 22, 1891. From that date electricity as a motive Power was put in operation gradually on all the roads, until the two or three horse car lines now running in Brooklyn are curiosities. The amount of judgments obtained against the trolley companies that have been satisfied runs ‘way up in the thou- sands of dollars. ‘Thousands of dollars’ worth of clain too, against the various companies for accidents re- ceived through the trolley have been settled out of court, while the court calendars are at present loaded down with Gamage sults against the trolley compres, Of cro unsatisfied judgments recorded against the trolley magnates, the Brook- lyn City and Brooklyn Heights com- Danies own the larger portion. These Toads ary.called by different names, but Ne at the purse strings of edch are » for the most part, by the eame indi- viduals. The Trolley Fights to the End. The unsatisfiel judgments against these corporations aggregate $205,107.48, and they fight to the bitter end every judgnent. It is a rare thing that they pay a judgment amounting to more than $00 without being compelled to do so by the Court of Appeals, Most of the judg- meats outstanding against these com- panies are now before the highest appel- late court of the State. The “Heights system,” as it is now called, is the largest in Brooklyn, The next largest is controlled by the At- lantic Avenue Railroad Company, The unsatisfled judgments against this road reach $75,178.10, This company !s more prompt in the payments of these judg- ments than its big rival, ‘The “little roads," as the Coney Isl- and and Brooklyn Railroad Company and Brooklyn City and Newtown Railroad Companies are called, only have @ few thousand dollars in judg- ments outstanding. The Brooklyn, Queens County and Suburban Railroad Company, comparatively a new con- cern, has none. THE TROLLEY’S DEAD. ‘The Graven of Victims to He Cov- ered with Flowers. President Hugh V. Monahan, of the Brooklyn Anti-Trust League, is en- gaged in carrying out a plan for decor- ating on Memorial Day the graves of victims of the trolley. Mr. Monahan conceived the idea yesterday morning, and expects to make the celebration @ big success, Associated with Mr. Mona- han are William J. Maxwell, Treasurer of the League; C. F. Swan, Secretary, and James McKenna, Commander of Thatford Post, No, 3, G. A. R. “A majority of the 110 trolley victims are buried in Greenwood, Holy Cross, ergreens and Cypress Hills said Mr. Monahan this “Out plan is to get up a sub- ‘ morning. acription to buy flowers and enlist the services of comrades in the G. A. R. to atrew them upon the graves. It is too bad that we didn’t think of the matter earlier, as we would have had more time to work. “We bave asked some of the cemetery People to help us. All we want them to do, is to place a smali flag upon the grace of each person whose life has been sacrificed to the trolley. “The money raised by subscription will be spent for flowers, which will be di- vided among the cemeteries where trol- ley victims are interred. It will be an easy matter to have the flowers dis- tributed. I have received offers from several Grand Army men to participate | in the work. A company of the Baptist Boys’ Brigade will a.so aid us.” Subscriptions to the Flower Fund may be sent to HV, an, Fifth avenue and Thirteenth st Wiillam J.
