/ CHLOROFORM IN DAYLIGHT. ‘Police Believe that Grocery Clerk Donath Was Bold. ly Robbed. INTHE OLD 'WAYO” DISTRI. Highwaymen Evidently Thought He Had His Employer's emai, Big Bank Roll, HE WAS FOUND UNCONSCIOUS. the Robbery Was Committed His Horse Drew Him Back to His Employer's Store. ‘The etory told by Willlam Donath about his being attacked and robbed while in @ grocery wagon at Twenty-seventh etreet and First avenue, by two men Monday morning, is causing the police no litte uneasiness. There was a time, not so long ago, when all that section enjoyed an unenviable reputation. Years| ego the Whyo gang held full sway in the neighborhood. It was at Twenty-seventh street and ‘Third avenue, where Danny Lyons com- mitted the murder for which he after- wards gave up his own life. It was also in the immediate vicinity that a Policeman was attacked and killed. Within the last few years, however, all the gangs have been cleaned out, and the police were well satisfied with the state of affairs. But now comes a story which, if true, goes to show that | men just as desperate as any Whyo/| frequent the neighborhood. Everything points to Donath's story being true. He is a young fellow, about twenty, tall and well built. He is head clerk in the grocery store of John P. Schussler, jr., on the southeast cor- ner of Second avenue and Twenty-ninth street. His employer says his clerk is |. He is never out nights and rink. For several years it has been the young clerk's custom to take his em- Bioyer’s money every Monday morning | }to the Fifth National Bank, Twenty- ‘ third street and Third avenue. It is evi- Gent that the men who attacked him last Monday were well aware of his errand to the bank. Donath, however, did not go to the bank last Monday. Instead, he started out shortly before 10 o'clock to deliver some groceries for his employer, and the only money in his possession was 79 cents of his own. He drove the horse and wagon along Second avenue to Twenty: down towards First avenue, where one of his Customers resided. Twenty-seventh street does not go be- low First avenue, as Bellevue Hospital comes in at that’ pont. On one cener af the street is a big lumber yard, and opposite is Matthews's soda water ap- paratus factory. | ‘There are not more block. and there is 110 ! immediate neighborhe Donath’s story is that just when with- in a few yards of Firat avenue, he felt 4 tug at his coat collar. A man had Jumped into the wagon, and after selz- ing him, demanded: youve UP that Dank-book, of I'll do ou. juor store in the twenty houses altogether in the ATOO HANDY REVOLVER. Now Leo Richter Is Held nious Ai Leo Richter, a cigar dealer of 139 Sixth avenue, was arraigned in Jeffer- Felo- his landlord, R. K. Brown, obtained a judgment aga:nst him for $40. Deputy iy Geraty was ordered to levy upon Richter’a stock tn satisfaction of The young clerk became frightened| the judgment. He went to Richter's and asked what the matter was. He foticed that the man who made the demand was about 5 feet 6 inches tall, | Ric roughly dressed, stoutly built and ha a dark mustache and slouch hat. Before the highwayman could reply another man jumped ‘nto the wagon, and with An oath, brought the horse to a stop, The next Insant, without being injured | or struck in any way, as far as he re. members, Donath was lying unconscious In the wagon, ‘One hour later his employer was sur- prised to see the horme and wagon come slowly ip to the store without a driver. Schussler ran out in alarm, and saw his clerk lying on back in the wagon. The latter, who was still un- conscious, was carried ingide and put to bed. ‘/nother hour elapsed before he was able to speak. Then he told hir story. Schussler hurried at once over to the East Thirty-fifth street uolice station d reported the facts, The wardmen were put on th ecase, but they accom- plished po Later in the day Donath called with a friend at Police Headquarters and re- eated his story to Chief Bymes, The who Was apparently Impressed vi . sent the young fellow with a detective to Bellevue Hospital in order to_see if he had been chloroformed, Six hours had ther, elapsed, so that had he been chloroformed the effect would have disappeated. Dr. Price, who examined him, could not for that reagon give a positive statement. From Donath’s appearance, his story, and the dizziness which even then affected him, the physician sald he belleved that chloroform had been used. ‘After he had fallen back in the wagon, unconscious, Donath had been robbed, as the 79 cents he nad when he started out was missing, all save a 10-cent plece, which was found in the bottom of the wagon. The groceries waich he had taken out with him had not been disturbed, The fact that the horse, which wan facini First avenue, had turned around ani walked back to the store puzzled every- boily. Grocer Schursler, when seen this morning by an “Evening World” re- Pater, sald he had no doubt whatever thht his clerk had been chloroformed and that the object was to steal the money which usually went to the bank Monday morning. “Whoever attacked him,” he added, “must have followed him’ before, and they evidently belong to a gang between this store and Twenty-third street. We may catch them yet.” e police have so far made no ar- rests. They told Donath to keep his eyes open and see if he could recognize the men, He believes he can do #0. The second man, he says, was much larger than bis companion, and both were of the “tough” order. a Stabbed a Ma ‘Willlam J.
